What is a tired but complete 230TE worth ?

Post by tsharkey »

Hi all, my brother owns a fully optioned 1984 W123 230TE that he wants to sell. It is straight, no rust, no accidents and all there, but ... it is tired as he has used it as a daily driver for years. Anyone buying it will need to "freshen" it up - a big long list of little things, nothing major, just fix the air, the cold start injector needs attention, the antenna needs a new mast, ....

There is 2 on Facebook Market place at the moment. One with a non SLS replacement engine fitted not running ($3,250) https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... ad84e79b28

and another that "needs more work" but looks lovely ($17,000). https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... ad84e79b28

It's neither of those, any advice on how to set a fair price for it ?

Hi Tim,
if I would read that from someone else (than you), I'd think "well, if it's all small points, why don't you do it before you sell"? Imho it's all points that offer lots of possibilities to get the price down ... something like "aircon" has a wide repair price range.

If someone like you would spend time on the car to fix most of those points, it might get a proper price, because the main thing is "no rust, no accidents, straight", which is rare afaik.

Good luck with the sale
Thomas

Thanks Thomas,

I would fix them (as I do on my car) but am up to my elbows in a more substantive project. Your right about aircon, I love the ads they say "just needs re gassing" ... well then ... REGAS IT rather than me seeking a discount cause I am taking on the real risk of buying a new compressor, receiver dyer and expansion value ..... ! I will recommend $7K to him and see if he gets any nibbles.
