"state of tune"/ poor lung/breathing capacity.

Post by newMercowner69 »

"Wagner wagon" (my C200 T Elegance),
Has been displaying inapprorpriate /impolite /rude manners at the traffic lights,
While idling/sitting in traffic&cruising.
He coughs,splutters, hiccups,hesitates&rough idle,
&Occassional/odd stalling,
&Farts (back firing),
I've had both the MAF sensor &spark plugs replaced& had a carbon de choke of the cylinder head,
All done 2-2.5 yrs ago,
Can etc the cause of his lung ability be ignition coil failure?,
He's done over 236K's since new,
Despite all of the above problems,
Recently i got 532 k's to a full tank of E10 United.

It sounds like you might have a vacuum leak, check that first.

Spray around the vacuum hose ends with a bit of brake cleaner or carb cleaner. If it revs up you have a vacuum leak.
Using E10 can make fuel hoses perish in an accelerated manner...

Any hose/tee/connector that is installed on the intake manifold can cause a vacuum leak. Also gaskets between engine and manifold, injector rubbers etc... Anything between the MAP/F sensor and the engine block is suspect.

How old is the fuel pump?
They exhibit all your symptoms when failing. Particularly in cold weather.

What year is your W202? pre '96 with bad wiring or post '96?

There is a way of connecting an LED so that you can read any faults detected by the computer. Might be worth a go before replacing parts that you aren't sure are the cause of the problem (also known as the parts cannon).

On a different type of car I had similar symptoms that was caused by a faulty camshaft sensor.

"Wagner's" mechanical surgeon(s) (Starline Motors Blackburn,Melbourne,Victoria),
Diagnosed ignition coil failure as being the cause of aforementioned problems,
All cost parts&labour $385,
He ("Wagner") is no longer coughing, spluttering, sneezing or farting!,
He's back to his old self again! :).

+1 on the comment about not using E10. It is evil stuff. If we strip an engine that has been running on cheap fuel, it is almost always black and filthy inside, no matter how regular the oil changes were. Strip and engine that has bene run exclusively on premium fuels and had regular oil changes and they look clean. Like many things in life you get what you pay for with fuel.

I "spoke" too soon,
Wagner's still mis behaving (rough uneven idling) &backfiring.....,
I'll have to call his surgeon&relay this information back to him.....,
Sigh curious as to What HE/THEY DIDN'T DO?!!!!!.

"Wagner" needed a new fuel filter& new spark plugs,
Even though i bought from/off fee/preybay (Ebay),
Top of the range NGK iridium spark plugs,
These were installed nearly 3 yrs ago,
But due to the use of E10 had severely badly corroded,
I was shocked&surprised at this,
From here/now on i'm ONLY ever going to give "Wagner" a drink of 91,
& Go back to using regular Bosch or NGK plugs,
BUT i may etc go back to the NGK iridium plugs.....

EHMM....91 contains Methanol almost per definition

Best to fill with 95 or 98

And checking the spark plugs would have been a first port of call...

Iridium plugs are not better than copper plugs, but they last longer (or are supposed to).
