W114 Suspension same as???

Post by gorms36 »

Hi legends.

Just curious to know about suspension sion in the w114s. I have a 230.6 and pictured below is a company that sells coilovers for a bunch of different Mercedes including the w108/109s. Are there any models that have a like for like suspension setup as the w114 as their sute doesn't have this model listed but does have a bunch of others.

Cheers all

Mike

Hi,

Sadly that w109 kit isn’t coilover kit. It’s just a suspension kit with separate springs and shocks to replace the air suspension bags and shocks in w109. The suspension system in w114/w107 has also separate shocks and springs, so it is bit tricky to produce coilover kit for that type of suspension. I haven’t ever seen any in my short 30 years history fixing Mercedes.

Cheers

W107’s are the closest to W114’s.
What are your goals, variable lowering or just a firmer ride?

Thanks Timo and Giles.

Just looking on this website for some coilovers that might fit the w114 for variable height adjustment. But without that as an option, I am needing some replacement springs for the rear.

W107 is same suspension and Dkubus do a coil over kit - google and you will find the website - here in SA. But coil over usually will really destroy ride quality - fine for the track but everything else is a compromise. Variable rate coil springs, like H and R or Eibach, preserve a good ride but also lower. Different grades of Bilstein shock depending on what you want ride wise.

Tell me if I am really wrong, but from an Engineering point of view, you cannot use a coil-over system on the W114 (at least not without major work to the body)

The springs and shocks are separated on a W114 chassis, at the front as well as on the back.
The springs take the weight and reaction forces of the car, and the damper mounts are designed to take damper forces only (a fraction of the weight).

If you now mount a coil-over system in place of the standard damper, guaranteed the damper mounts will be ripped out of the body.

Or am I missing something here?

Not really what I’d consider to coil over except perhaps for the rear.
The system let you adjust coil height downwards.
Takes twice the coupons to purchase compared to H&R lowering springs and Bilstein B4 shocks I have in Lola.

Bart is right (of course!). The link below is to the adjustable Dkubus set up, which is fine if you want fine adjustments between tracks and events and ride height up and down, but Giles set up is a fraction of the money to do this.
