Mercedes Benz Coupe Sable 1989 Auto 4spd 300CE–24v
VIN: WDB1240512B242003 Engine: 10498022009533
My 124 coupe auto transmission is kaput. I am hoping to locate a transmission in good order. Any help to source one would be appreciated.
I am in Castle Hill NSW 2154
I have a 4 speed - are 5 speed auto transmissions interchangeable with mine?

Hi Tiny, 4 and 5 speed are not interchangeable. Different transmission length means differant tailshaft and cross member. Also the 4th and 5th gears are electronically controlled so you need the loom and control module as well. Depending on the condition of the rest of the car and your long term ownership requirements, I would suggest you get you old one rebuilt. A used one is going to be the same age as yours and lottery at best. That is of course unless you can find a wreck with a receipt in the glovebox say it was rebuilt in the last 10 years.
What is wrong with your transmission?

Re: 1989 coupe 124 300CE-24 auto transmission wanted
Thank you David - I have not been able to access this forum & Covid did not help.
My coupe is still marooned on my driveway. A specialist automatic transmission reconditioner has tasked me to establish whether my transmission is 4 or 5speed. I have tried to find a phone or email address for Mercedes Classic (Germany) to obtain the transmission part number and thereby what exactly it was. Once established Mercedes Classic should be able to supply whatever is required. I am informed the part number should include 753.5 - if it is a 5 speed.
If any one can assist with information I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
Adrian

What are the letters/numbers on the shifter, that will tell us.
5 speed is PRND432
4 speed is PRND32

Re: 1989 coupe 124 300CE-24 auto transmission wanted
Thanks John for your reply. The transmission bloke did not give me that much easier task.
He also was adamant that the 5spd was fitted in the 1989 124 coupe was unique and that subsequent coupe were fitted with a different 5spd due to the complexity of the 1989 transmission.
Either way I will inform this forum of progress.
If anyone knows contact details for Mercedes Classic (Germany) please let me know.
Regards
Adrian

He is very much misguided there...
If you are chasing a build sheet, send me a message with your VIN number.

Re: 1989 coupe 124 300CE-24 auto transmission wanted
John your pardon for my lengthy delay in responding. I have been very ill and now expect relief after getting a pacemaker a month ago. So far so good
My transmission is definitely a five speed (PRND432). Apparently the build date is 1990 not 1984. VIN; 12405128242003
I can't navigate OZBENZ however have you any knowledge of a used replacement? I doubt I can afford a re-build.
One of my younger brothers (an spritely 75 - I'm 76) is blind - he asked me in late 2021 if we could organise a road trip (seeing eye dog included!) in NSW. The W124 had a lot of money spent on it and when the trans collapsed so did the trip. He was a teacher in the Central West and our family were graziers and orchardists. That's something I would love to do for him.
Sincere thanks

Re: 1989 coupe 124 300CE-24 auto transmission wanted
Your transmission data
722501 02 381035 722.501 W 5 A 030 AT 5-SPEED
Engine : M - engine: 104980 22 009533 104.980 M 10
Good luck with that.
Probably doubtful whether there will be any parts available to service that transmission
The five speeds known to be "troublesome"
W140 early 320SE's may have shared the same transmission.
With enough money it maybe possible to change over to 4 speed but probably not economical.
