Diesel help

Post by beerbaron »

So with many thanks to CraigB , my 240d is water proof

however i have long going issues with the om616 engine.
the transmission is rebuilt
I've had the valves adjusted , new glow plugs put in , all filters changed over , diesel purge.

the lack of power is a real worry , on day to day city commute , its not a problem as the roads are flat and the speed is 60-70kmh
but on weekend , driving to a property, up the freeway , it is dangerous , cant maintain speed when climbing, even drop down a gear makes no difference

what else do i need to investigate ?

Have you checked that your prime pump is in good order? I know about Japanese versions, that have a gauze filter there.
It sounds like you have a fuel issue. If all fails, run the engine from a jerry can in the engine compartment.

Did you change the air filter? These models air filters get glogged with exhaust soot if you have a slight leak especially around the exhaust manifold to engine pipe flange gasket. Disconnect the filter hose from the intake manifold and go for a drive.

Thanks for the advice..

it wont even start now .
Glow plugs get warm ,
I've checked there's fuel coming ( the return lines have diesel in them )

It tries to turn over , and if i hold the starter long enough , can even get oil pressure up, no luck... This also drains the battery
even tried removing the oil cap to try and start it , of course the oil vapour comes out

any where else to check ?

I bet you have an air leak. Replace all crush washers (incl on top of the fuel filter). The banjo bolts all have them. Not sure what IP you have but the four delivery valves probably have them as well.

Crack open the 4 injector lines at the injectors and see if fuel it coming out of those when cranking (disable glowplug). I have been known to pull them out so the starter can spin more freely to pump the fuel through the system.

Once the lines are wet at the injector, refit and enjoy.

look at the fuel filter near the tank and the line from tank to filter as it seems like the blockage is in that section.

I think Sharkey is more on the money. An air leak will cause a bone dry pump.

Or were you referring to the part lubricated with engine oil? If that is dry, the pump will wear out really quickly...

Agree about the air leak, but would also double suggest that you not only drain the tank and check the filter in the base, but that you remove the fuel tank sender (under plastic bung in boot floor) and inspect the insides of the tank. If the filter and base of tank have a coating of black gunge, you have diesel algae.

Wow been a few months
time for an update

replaced the alternator and starter motor.
now it starts first time after glow plugs get warm

diesel smoke , this is ongoing ,at idle , there is bluish smoke

then last month, the vacuum pump diaphram went ( brakes were really hard to press )
managed to replace that and brakes are good

this old diesel sure has its quirks
