Post by tsharkey »

Thanks,

The generic lock smiths are quoting $450 for a programed replacement fob
MB in Fairfield will do a genuine one for $550 - Gotta show my rego papers etc

Spoke with Max at German Star (nice guys) and he said his guy is about that cost.

You can buy a blank fob for $20 from China and Autel IM608 key coder for locally for $4,700 ($3K imported_). This tool does all fobs so would be useful for a mechanic but is not cost justifiable for me.

You can also buy a specific tool for the W202/W208/W210 for $1K from CGDI, which also does "mileage correction" Hah - We know what that means .... It'[s a shame cause I'll now never believe the electric ODOs if this is the case

I will have a long hard look for the lost one as $450 is a lot for a key ....

Get your wife/partner/mistress/girl friend/etc to look. That usually works for me.

As happenstance would have it, the fob failed.... (No IR bleep using the phone). Pulled it apart and tried every trick known to the internet. Dead. A thorough search by myself and 1 other could only yield the blank and an extra metal key :crybaby: :crybaby:

I found someone who stopped by and cut two keys off the Ignition module. Being a W202, no ODBII module to read the IR data, had to extract it via the IR sensor on the barrel. Also advised me that the ignition module being so old could fail and the only real option (given how old it is) is to go to the dealer. Don't bother getting one from a wreckers as it is likely to be just as close to failure.

$540 for 2 FOBs, with metals Keys, 12 months warranty. They are not genuine MB fobs but electronics is electronic the cases are good quality.

If broken - Generally dry joints on the circuit board or poor connection on the battery terminals.
I've fixed a few of these when broken

Not so long ago they were only $220 each at 3 Point Fairfield and then suddenly price ramped up to over $500.

You could try Aust ECU repairs. They only deal with electronics pertaining to Mercedes.

They can make and copy fob keys cheaper than dealerships.
