Front Stone Chip Protection Grating Device ;-)

Post by T-Modell »

Hi guys,

I have no idea what name you're using for those protection devices between the lights and the grill:
W115 protection.jpg
Are those still available? New? Used? What's the correct name to search for it ... at least for me unknown here in Germany (maybe the lack of roos)

That fits what I had heard that they were Australian and locally made - not a Mercedes part, so that's interesting that you haven't seen them in Germany - which confirms the 'hearsay' comment.

"Stone Guards" is what i would have said is what they are called and a google images search seems to confirm that.

My first W108 had them and I preferred the lines without them and left them off after respray. Pretty quickly I learnt why people had them with 'peppering' of the paint. My understanding is that our dry roads get all this grit that doesn't get washed away as often as places where it rains a lot. This gets picked up by the car in front etc and hurled at the car behind. It was pointed out to me by a friend who was a light specialist, particularly for English cars and he would make annual trips to the UK and bring back used lights from swap meets / auto jumbles, because the glass in them was good compared to ours, that get that 'sand blasted' look.

If you are looking for a set and can't find anything closer to home, I can probably help you out. No idea what freight is to Germany on such things and best way to go. They weigh about 1.5kg for both.

Thanks Craig,

I cannot find any here. Shipping is not a problem, just not cheap. Aussie Post, Airmail, I guess something between 30...50 AUD.

If you have a set, I'd be happy to see some pics and what they might cost. It should be for the W115, not original, but roads in Argentina weren't sooo good either.

Hey, I'm still here, just not as often as I used to!!

I had no idea these were Australian only, I've seen them on so many cars I just assumed they were a factory option.

Makes sense with what Craig is saying. I agree they are perhaps not the best thing to look at, but certainly a practical arrangment

Will we be seeing some on the Ute soon Thomas?

Hi guys,

I need your help now: Just spoke to the TÜV; it's alright, but he needs some "proof" that it is a contemporary accessory.

Does anyone have any brochure, ad etc. with a W108/W111/W114/W115 or similar of the times - at least 30 years old - with those stone guards on?

That would help a lot ... he believes what I say, but others might not. As it is totally unknown here, there's no understanding.

Regards and thanks
Thomas

P. S.: Gratings over the lights is - btw - NOT allowed here in Germany, lights must not be obstructed ...

There's a challenge! I am sure they were about when i was a child and in my early stages of car spotting. There was a neighbour with a regular visitor in a white W114 which had them. For starters I will try and dig up some old car mags with for sale adverts at least 30 yrs old.

as Craig was so nice to sell me a pair of those guards ... the above question is still open. Does anybody have some brochures, car magazines, etc. where this stuff is advertised? Thanks for looking!

I did a good search on the internet and i can't believe how hard it is to find anything - even an old black and white period photo - you would think amongst all the crap on the web I could find just one photo! My next step if noting turns up is to get out a box of old magazines - hopefully 30+yrs old - we had 'Unique cars' and 'just cars' back then i think, and surely there is a for sale advert in there with a photo with them on there. But would be better to have a brochure or something else from the time in colour.

Looked through about 15 issues of In Aller Welt that were dated from 1970 to 1987 that I have in my bookshelf and all photos of contemporary-for-that era cars did not have the stone guards installed.
Continued looking through the '90s and early 2000 editions of Mercedes (I do not have the complete set) but nothing turned up either.

In Aller Welt was the official Mercedes-Benz magazine until it was replaced by Mercedes around 1991/92

Here are some pages from the earliest magazine I have on the bookshelf for both these publications.

Hi guys,

last try here: Does anyone have any historic "proof", that those stone guards are period correct? Advertisment, catalogue, brochure, magazine ... anything older than 30 years?

I received the stone guards from Craig today (16 days delivery from Oz) - thanks again! - and they went straight to the chromer ... hopefully I get them back before xmas.

Thanks again, if someone could find something, that helps me.
Thomas

P. S.: Background for that: From a technical point of view, there are no objections; but for a historic license it has to be period correct. Here in Germany nobody has ever seen something like that ...

Hi Thomas,

I think I've got just the proof you need about the use of the stone guard in a period car.

This image is from a forty year of MB Club of Victoria magazine - Dec 1980 to be specific - and is the Concours d'Elegance outright winner.
1980 Dec - 280S with stone guards.png

Send me a message if you need a PDF of this magazine.
The scanned magazine pages are blurred but the stone guards are obvious. They were a great place to mount grill badges collected from attending various car events.

Here's a 1995 video from the MB Club Victoria Concours d'Elegance.
You'll find a number of cars there with stone guards.

https://youtu.be/y1VdfAr6HAA

I've also uploaded a number of Club videos from 1996 - 2000 to YouTube and there should be more there.

Email sent to Thomas with PDF files containing the Concours d'Elegance results from the Mercedes-Benz Club Victoria from the 1980 - 1993.

I had a copy of the 1993 Dec in my library and this picture shows it was a common option for Australian MBs - four of the six cars in this double page had them installed.

Hi to everyone,

just came back from the chromer ... the stone guards are now "perfect" ... in case you're interested in the wallpaper of my office's ceiling ... have a look

The brackets are black galvanised and I will put it back together again, as soon as I have a new round sealing. Thanks again to Craig for selling them and to Chai for providing valuable information!

Hi down under,
don't know, if this is of any interest, but today I finished putting the stone guards together. I used M3 screws (instead of rivets), but they look like rivets. Was a tight squeeze, as the new chrome and the galvanising adds a coating, that makes the stuff bigger, but I got it into the frames.

To stop the actual guards from clattering in the frames, there was a rubber ring pressed in. Of course very old and I replaced it with a 6mm round rubber profile; with a plastic spatula I could squeeze it in, so no glue necessary.

Regards
Thomas

Looks great and particularly like your rivet replacements. I think the old (non original I think) strips that held the mesh in, looked like the stuff you put into aluminum window screens to hold the fly wire in place! But being from Australia maybe it was original! I'm sure your rubber strip looks better and does the job.

Thanks Craig,

I'm pretty happy about the result, thanks to you for selling them to me! Just thought I post the solution here too, so others might get ideas what to do with those stone guards. Even the TUEV-guy here in Germany responded with a statement like "your chromer knows his job"

The rubber was pretty hard, so around shore 90. That's why it took some force to squeeze it in. Advantage: it cannot fall out. Those screws were a suggestion from the chromer, however the M4 didn't fit the front chrome plate, so I went with M3 and self-locking nuts.

Regards
Thomas

They look great - and the rubber is a good idea - now I'll need to check mine to see if they rattle...

Those stone guards come up pretty good.

just as a side note , I have seen a conversion , where someone has put a small auxillary round fog light , which has been neatly recessed into the stone guard
