Possibly wrecking a w116- any interest in WA?

Post by Nabstud »

I’m considering getting a parts car to grab a few items fit my car - non chipped headlamp, couple interior parts, headrests etc. To get them separately, if I can find them, would be $400+.

Just seeing if anyone knows anyone who may be interested in a running motor and gearbox, radiator, chrome work, interior parts etc. not sure if it’s worth going to the effort to part it out. I have enough room but wouldn’t want to keep it for more than a couple months.

I have had calls from people looking for parts and I am looking for some too and in Adelaide they are very thin on the ground, when once very common. I am looking for a couple of good rear screens and one thing this other guy was looking for was a bamboo colour back seat.... but neither would make sense to freight from WA. Once upon a time they seemed to be everywhere, and not that long ago. I did have a no heater rear screen out of my old 280s that I hung on to for ages, but when having to consolidate my storage, and with no W116, I must have tossed it..... can always get another one right! But generally when i have advertised bits when i have needed to shift a car, there is little response and just odds and sods. Perhaps you can find somewhere to store spares - panels, mechanical spares etc and even rust free cuts if good bits in shells.... eventually they will be needed but I think generally people are reluctant to invest cash and store parts on the chance they need things in the future.

but back to original question, there could be parts I might need, but nothing big to freight. Would depend on trim material and colour too.

Hey Craig, I have a W116 450SEL parts car here at the moment with a black interior that looks pretty nice. It is not mine, but Frankenbenz owners (FB needs a trans transplant...) but i can ask him if you want.

Thanks Drew. Same distance issues but I can ask this other person, Davide Frada, who some may remember from very early pre 'Ozbenz' days, but he was mainly after a bamboo mb tex rear seat. Black interior sounds nice. I have a 450SEL that pretty much owes me nothing after getting a set of wheels off it, but I got it running and its been a really handy extra 'hack' car. So I could wreck it or fix its rust and complete respray and have 'well worn' but good mechanicals. I figure if I just keep my eyes out and pick up bits where I can, like a rear screen, and then even if I don't do it, it is a 'kit' for someone else to do.........its so far down the line of projects for me, but a worthy car that I would rather see saved than crushed. But meanwhile its still handy and cheap to keep on road with club rego. Love the style and feel of the W116 and love the 450 V8 combined with its low 3.07 or whatever it is diff..... great sound and feels like a bit of a rocket for such a big old car....... just not so great on fuel!

Hi Drew - Would that W116 have a 3.07 Diff up rear ? Did it run nice and smooth ? Any interest in having it pulled and sent down to Sictoria (or Math may be interested, tho his bank balance is suffering for a misbehaving OM617)

Is he willing to separate the rear headrests and mounting gear by chance?

Hi there :)

I have a 3.06 differential sitting here gathering dust for the last 18 months, unsure what car it came from as it was in a pile of diffs. I think it's from a 450SL or something according to this page

https://mbturbo.com/gear-ratios/

so yeah, to fit it on my car i would need to swap the yoke + a spacer of some time to match the w123 drive shaft. Or change the drive shaft's side to fit the V8's Diff size.
