Solex carb/air cleaner seal?

Post by Nabstud »

Anyone know where to get the seal that is between the carby and air cleaner body?
If I can't get one, any reason I can't just put a bead of mastic on the carby, let it dry then screw the air cleaner onto it?

I can't remember how it attaches - its a big flat air cleaner isn't it? If someone has access to the EPC, they could get a part number and then you can search on that to see if any reasonably priced ones somewhere in the world. I can't imagine demaind is enough to have aftermarket manufactured, but then again perhaps lots in places like South Africa perhaps.

Its got a fair amount of air cleaner area, and the seal is only really to stop it sucking dirt past it - not going to affect tune. Mastic doesn't really dry or harden and can be a bit messy, but if its a fairly thin gap, no doubt it would hold against the sucking action. I would have thought a visit to somewhere like Clark Rubber (if they still exist) and look at a range of materials to gut a gasket from - just a thought.

Clark Rubber might be worth a go. I need the actual round rubber seal that sits on the carby, then the air cleaner body sits on that.

Mastic is a bit drastic!
Try this: https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sel ... 03600.html
If you put that on one surface sparingly, and lightly oil the mating surface, it will come apart with ease when necessary.
Very easy to remove later too.

I could be mistaken, but that looks like an O-ring to me.
You should be able to get one from your local seal supplier, just measure the OD of the carburetor (O-rings are sold per internal diameter and cross section)

Also I don't know how you would work it out, but some cars use big O-rings in air cleaners. I think I picked up from a forum that the nla ducati petrol tank retaining straps were actually pretty much identical to a certain model Honda air cleaner o-ring. There is an old school place in Adelaide called 'car parts plus' and it has rows and rows of shelving with various car parts and a good complement of staff that have been there for a while. I remember when I needed a range of radiator hoses to improve the 'swirl pot' arrangement on my clubman and i just went there with the bends and sizes I needed, and they took me behind the counter and within a few minutes of going through this huge rack of hoses, I had what I needed. So If you had a place like that, no doubt they could suggest a number of gaskets you could try. But just chucking ideas around.

I don't know why I didn't see Barts post.... My comments look a bit odd following it. Yes I agree, I hadn't thought of a bearing place, but that's definitely what I would do.

I know why :happy3:

I posted something else originally, then looked at the picture again and realized it was an O-ring.
You probably started writing based on my post previous to the edit.

Thanks for the pic, I tried searching for some but not clear enough for my eyes, that does look like an o ring. Mine is missing completely so that pic is a good piece of the puzzle. Have a couple guys local to me that do hose fittings etc that maybe able to help. 👍

If you don't have any luck give me a size an I'll have a look at work. Looks pretty big though but I'm sure we have some on a roll that can be cut to length and joined with superglue. I'm not home for another week yet but happy to have a look and mail it to you when I'm home.

I missed you are in the same great city as I am.

The guys with the biggest stock concerning O-rings are Transseals in Welshpool

Ask for 70 shore NBR (nice and soft)

Perth
1 Atlas Court
Welshpool
WA 6106

Here is an overview of standard sizes https://www.marcorubber.com/o-ring-size-chart-as568.htm

You order by the RED number in the left most corner (they usually say DASH 355 etc.)

You will probably be looking around the dash 350 to dash 360 range....

Do not cut and superglue together.
It will create a very hard local spot that stops the O-ring from sealing.
Just buy a fitting example, they are quite cheap....

Thanks heaps for that!! Just had a measure and it’s about 133mm ID. Not sure which pics I looked at last time but I had a good search and it clearly looks like an o-ring. Some pics look flatter, I gather they are just an old squashed seal.

Cool,

I hope you mean 133 OD (outer diameter where the O-ring is supposed to sit around)

From the selector, I gather a dash 354 is fine (5.33 mm cross section), or if that is too fat you could try a dash 251 (3.53 mm cross section)
They are a bit smaller than the OD of the carb, but a bit of stretch is good (less than 10%)

Regards, Bart
