Engine Swap - Which Spark Plugs Do I Use

Post by RavzSa »

Hi All,

Hope everyone is well!

Years ago the original engine (M111.960, 2.2L) had severely overheated and I ended up swapping the engine out for a M111.970, 2.3L.

MB used to supply me with an NGK BCP6ET spark plug for the 960 and which I've subsequently been using in the 970 (approx. 8 years).

Doing some research and I found that NGK lists an NGK BCP6E plug for the M111.970 (W210) and M111.960 (W124 E220 (93-96) and for some reason, NGK lists the BCP6ET for the 220E M111.960 (92-93). Not sure why because I understand that the 220E and E220 to be mechanically and electrically the same?

I know the difference between the 2 spark plugs is that the BCP6E is single ground and the BCP6ET is 3 ground.

Which would be the best plug to use now?

I was reading and thinking.... that T must stand for something.... and then i got the answer. I'm not an engineer or mechanic, but personally, I don't think it will make a lot of difference on a standard engine, given the length, protrusion, heat range etc. is the same. Presumably if there is enough energy at the electrode it can arc to the three and more spark there, but I'm just not sure how much difference that would make. Perhaps MB worked that out too and why they changed to the simpler plug. But then you think they would have superseded the part number on the earlier engine too. If they were the same price, I would go with the T, if they cost lots more I would experiment and see if I could measure any difference in economy etc.

Many years ago I had a rotary engine Mazda and that would foul plugs from time to time. It wasn't a standard engine. You could get the 3 arm plugs but were much more expensive and I couldn't pick any difference to the single arm ones. I can't remember what Mazda recommended. Also gapping much easier on the simple plugs. But then they made platinum plugs, much more expensive but they made a big difference to fouling.

I have actually been using the 3 ground plugs all along.

I think I'm going to get the updated plug (single ground) and check if it makes any difference.

MB must have had some reason for the change :dontknow:
