I am fully rebuilding an OM617A using parts from the US. 5 Cylinder. Not new pistons but sleeves in the block. The parts budget is $2,200. Then add any machining / valve regrinds / rebore etc. I just had the valve seats redone. Crank was perfect, so was cam so only standard bearings were needed.

Are removing / re-installing yourself
Are you pulling it down / putting back together

If no to the above, add about $6K to $7K.

Then budget some contingency because something will go wrong.

So if DIY, worth it. If fully done by 3rd party, the car better be worth it.

Are there problems with the motor now?
I wouldn't overbore too much unless the bore is damaged and it needs it. Let the machine shop have a look at the block before you buy pistons

Yes I agree with that comment. You would only want to take out as much as you need - not like you are going to get much extra capacity from 30 thou - if that was the reason. New pistons are a significant expense and there is no reason if it isn't within tolerance to not just hone and rering. I imagine it is unlikely you are going to do another million miles in it.
