soft close doors vacuum pump replacement or repair.

Post by pina4greg »

Pulled out the vac pump from the boot and found that one of the lines had broken off the nipple. when taking off the other lines being so old, a small piece of each nipple has stuck inside the clips. can the nipples be replaced on these or do i need to source a whole replacement???

Ouch, that looks like a 1 piece injection moulded part.

Unless the connectors are screwed in, you will have to buy a new one.

You can always try to glue it with 2-pack araldite....

That's disappointing to have that sort of structure where they should have known when they made it, it would have a restricted life. Just thinking out loud, and I'm not an engineer, but my thoughts went to if you could get metal tube that would slip down inside the outlet or you could maybe ream a little bit out. You don't want to make it too much bigger and weaken it. Then with glue you could slide the broken outlet back over it. Basically sleeving all those outlets. Its the same method really as they did when they made stupid plastic tanks on radiators and the top outlet broke and many motors destroyed. Replacement radiators then had a metal sleeve inside the outlet to strengthen it.

I think it will have to slightly restrict the diameter but I don't think it would matter that much. I'm trying to think where i would go for tube. A brake place with different diameter brake and fuel lines? I'm picturing some brass tube i have seen too but can't remember where I have seen it. Carby place? fuel line?

RS components have pneumatics and accessories.

There was a screw-in pneumatic mount that on the other end had push-in fitting.

If I remember correctly they were both positive and negative pressure type.

Those pumps have been a short coming since the day the W140 was released.
Plenty of articles on the internet about the pumps.
The pump in my car broke down within 18 months from new.

Strange as it might seem, 08 48 replaced 09 48, however that was superseded by 16 48 and then 17 48, so there is plenty of choice.

Hi guys,

I was battling a similar problem but I re-moulded the missing plastic using a soldering iron on low power using excess plastic from the valve block

Before

Adding plastic

Sanding level

Finished

Now if I'd only checked the pump beforehand!

Wow!

Mercedes really did go through a dark period around the W140...
That looks like a pump I got with my 35 dollar airbed from K-mart.

So i can use a 0948 instead.....they seem to be more common....but what about the 1648 do they still fit the older system???
