Front guards removal

Post by kaihoc »

I was trying to take both front guards off in order to have the rust repaired.
Now I have one problem that screws holding the chrome strip at the bottom of the both guards unable to be taken out (rusted and the head is broken now). So I am planning to use a locking pliers or screw extractor, and also thinking to drill it out if those are not successful.

Here also have another bigger problem is, I cannot reach the screws at the back of the left side guard since the vacuum reservoir is there. And I have unscrewed the vacuum reservoir mount through the passenger foot resting area. But the vacuum reservoir with the mount is still not possible to be taken out. The screws (too long) on the mount are not able to pass through. Could anyone give me some hints for how to take it out or get reach to those screws? Is the vacuum reservoir can be detached from mount?

And I know there is another challenge is to due with the glue.....

Don't know 114 but guessing same as 108 - Those bottom guard screws just go into a captive nut 'clip'. If stuffed, just drill the heads, get them off and see if you can salvage clip or someone will have them. From memory vac res has about 7mm or 8mm small screws from plastic to metal bracket - be pretty hard to get to I would think. Can you not get to the bolts with extensions and uni joints etc.? You just need to get it all off and then once apart will be able to clean threads etc and work out best way to go back. Hope that helps

There are two screws behind the passenger front fender. I may able to get the bottom one off but definitely not the top one...
For the vacuum reversion, I have tried to feel the the top and bottom where the mount seems attached to, but I cannot feel there is screw or nut. I may try again.

For the "glue", what is the best method to deal with it? Would a heat gun to heat it up is enough? or a fire torch gun?

Thanks.

The only thing with heat is that by the time you get the glue hot enough, you've probably cooked the paint off, so depends if you want to repaint under bonnet etc. In the past I have used a combination of 'judicious' levering and use of an extended stanley knive and lots of patience. Recently I saw one of those specialist windscreen removing tool with a wire to cut through the glue of a stick in windscreen. I reckon it might have been supercheap that had an online sale of specialist tools - but from wherever, I reckon that would be worth a go.

You might be lucky, its an old car and they might have been off before and also it seems some are stuck better than others.
