gauge problem.

Post by Pete49 » Fri 12 Jul, 2019 1:58 pm

Actually a couple questions. On my 450SEL the fuel gauge works when it feels like. Temp, oil pressure and amp gauge all ok. I've checked the tank sender and its ok. Sometimes all of them stop and then work again but the fuel gauge not so much.
Also a question on the speedo. Its in mph and I have access to a kph version but wonder if it would be out due to gearing?

So the tank sender, you have had a multimeter on it and can see when moving it that its resistance is consistent and changing? I guess pulling the gauges out and checking earths etc next. I can't think of any other tricks in the system.

You can change to a KM/H one and get it recalibrated, or if you know the car it came from has the same differential as your own it should be good :)

the fuel gauge thing. Likely the fuel signal sender inside of the fuel tank needs a good clean and the float in it gets stuck sometimes from the buildup of gunk from many years of use.

check this out for a bit of an idea
