W108 Steering Wheel removal?

Post by Fozza » Sun 07 Jul, 2019 2:31 pm

Can anyone provide advice on removing and replacing a late version (non ring embedded) W108 steering wheel? I've a floor shift '72 3.5 with a significantly cracked steering wheel and have a much better steering wheel from a '69 straight 6 280SE. Any easy instructions for dummies? I'm hoping I can just take it off without mucking with the deep centre nut?!! Thanks in advance.

I haven't played with a 108 wheel for a while, but i do recall the wheel is like a flat bit that bolts to the boss from memory, but i am not sure what is involved, what needs to come off to make the change.

I think your memory is good Craig. When I've pulled off the pad, it looks like the wheel and ring can simply be unbolted from the boss, and then replaced without having to deal with the deep centre nut that bolts the boss the column. Moreover, from all the W108 wheel pics I've seen its ' flat bit', so it looks like that would be the case. Will give it a go. Just wanted to know if anyone had traversed this terrain before I dive into deeper water than I can swim in! Much appreciated...

I'm in the same boat on this. I have a later model W114 wheel that I'm replacing with the period correct W108 steering wheel.

As I understand it the circle cap clips out, with the later model horn plate peeling out on the later model style.

So the wheel you are replacing, does it have a seperate boss or look like it is all covered in rubber including rim? If its the rubbery one then I think you need to undo the nut and replace the whole thing. Not that hard though. Main thing is getting a good tool onto it with leverage and someone to help hold the wheel against the force. Have heard often when people think they can rely in the steering lock, they end up breaking it and making a much bigger job of it all.

just saw for sale post - I think you need to replace that whole wheel because they don't have a boss assembly.... but other comments all apply.

And ignore my email about the wheel. I should probably do another wanted advert about looking for an early W114/W107 Wheel - before the rubbery ones like is on your car.
