Oil Filter housing rubbing on subframe - 350SL

Post by SouthernWookiee » Fri 14 Jun, 2019 3:42 pm

Hi Everyone,

having an issue with oil filter clearance on a 350SL which is strange, so I joined the forum to see if there's anyone with experience of the issue, and perhaps a solution.

The oil filter housing on my 1972 350SL is rubbing on the subframe. The engine mounts have been replaced (thought they were sagging and causing the rub) but even with new mounts, there's not enough clearance between the subframe and engine to locate the oil filter housing.

I've only just purchased the car (had a '74 SLC previously) and the SL has matching engine number and chassis, though the chassis has been resprayed and I can't confirm it by stamp, only by the plate. The badge is a 450SL, but chassis number is 107043, that of a 350.

A couple of questions:

1. Could it be a different subframe (not a 107)? Do any other subframes fit the SLs, impeding the oil filter on the 350?

2. Could the oil filter mount that attaches to the engine be wrong i.e. slightly different angle?

3. Could the brackets that support the engine mounts be bolted on in reverse causing the engine to be slightly offset (i.e. left bracket on the right side and right bracket on the left). Does anyone know if the brackets are the same left and right? Would like some info before pulling them out.

Thanks for any assistance offered.

Cheers, Geoff.

Did it ever not hit? My first guess is that this is a sedan motor/oil filter that hangs down. Have a look at say google images under bonnet of other SL's - pretty sure they point up and sedans down. Easy enough to change over the filter assembly if you can get one off SL/SLC. I don't have a 107 with engine in here at home at the moment to check for you - others might.

As for matching number - did you mean matching the number on the datacard? It shouldn't match the chassis number (just thinking if it did that might suggest some changed number).

Pretty sure subframe will be right, but with a car new to you, check to see it has been properly reinforced - it was a factory recall in the US and most cars here done, but I have seen 2 cars that have not had it done so they are out there. Very very dangerous if it cracks. There is a thread on here with photos etc. .... I can look for it if you can't find it - fairly easy fix to reinforce it.

I can check brackets, part numbers etc if my initial suggestion not correct - can check Monday.

Very strange indeed to have the oil filter housing hit the sub-frame.
The downward facing housing (bolt at the bottom of the housing) is correct - like your previous SLC.

Don't know why and am interested to know too. Am guessing a sub-frame from another model (say, W114/115) was used.

You have something bent out of shape ,Frame Rails ,subframe itself, and or rear transmision mount way out of kilter.
You should have some other alignment problems with this like maybe the fan shroud missing because the fan is out of kilter as well .
More pix of the undercarriage and top of engine would help us immensely also it looks like the a-frame in your pic has been BUGGERED up so might be a clue.

It must be the later alloy engines that have the different direction oil filter. I would think the easiest way would be to get it next to another car and with a tape measure check out where the differences are. If you put your location in your profile you are more likely to get offers to help.
