REPLACE TIMING CHAIN AND GUIDES ON 230CE M102.980 ENGINE

Post by lancaster » Tue 14 May, 2019 1:54 am

Hi Guys
I was progressing quite well until today!

-Removed necessary ancillaries and raised the engine
-Removed the mounts and chocked the engine up about 3 inches
-Removed the sump avoiding the oil pump suction pipe
-Removed the spacer ring and timing cover
-removed the chain tensioner
-Split the chain and removed it
-Pulled out the top pivots and and removed the top slide rail
-Removed bottom slide rail

Went to remove the main tension rail - guess what - it wont come out without removing the cylinder head or extracting the pivot pin!!!

Any suggestions would be most welcome

regards Hans

The only way to remove the timing chain tensioner guide is to remove the timing case. To do this you need to remove either the sump or the head. Both options not good.

Also best practice is to use the old chain to wind in the new chain, not remove it like you have done.
