Diesel engine Water / Methanol Injection setup

Post by Tony From West Oz » Wed 17 Oct, 2018 12:09 am

OK, This is on an OM662 in my Musso, but would apply for other NA or Turbo diesel engines.

Adjacent to the water pump is a small white circular object which has wiring soldered on it and a purple air line going to the IP ALDA( manifold pressure).
This is a pressure switch to prevent water injection when the engine is off, but the ignition on.

Hi Tony,

Just playing the mechanical engineer (and devil's advocate) here:

What measures did you take to stop the bottle siphoning its contents into the intake manifold when the car is on an angle (I am thinking about water lock in one of the cylinder when that happens)
Is the nozzle equipped with a spring loaded check valve (the pump will have to overcome a few psi of pressure before water is injected?
Does the water get atomized?

Just want to play safe here....

Hi Tony,

What is the operating pressure of the water pump? I assume it is max turbo boost pressure + X to ensure you aren't blowing bubbles back into the water tank and make the nozzle atomise properly.

And most importantly - how does it go? Can you feel the difference?

I had some problems with my nozzle getting blocked due to minor impurities in my water / methanol supply, so I installed a filter screen between the tank and the pump and it has worked a treat. You could probably use one of your diesel pre-filters for that purpose.

For those interested, but scratching heads as to why inject Water + Metho (or Gin & Tonic) into a Diesel engine, here’s an informative article:

Bart, I did install a vacuum solenoid in the water line but must have I got it the wrong way around and it dumped the excess water when the pump turned off, resulting in a alcohol aroma in the cabin. I will reinstall it, but ensure that the pump dead heads when the solenoid valve is de-energised.
Thanks for the reminder, That was why I installed it in the first place.

3DB, This is the pump I used https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-WATER-P ... :rk:2:pf:0
The listing states 40psi max pressure, so more than enough to overcome the 10psi boost pressure.
With the pump off, the boost pressure cannot blow back into the reservoir as the pump valves would block back flow of inlet air pressure into the reservoir.

Stefan, I used this one: DEVILSOWN WATER METHANOL INJECTION NOZZLE #3, on ebay.
#3 is 3 gallons (US) per hour at 100psi (189mL/Minute)
Give that I am operating at around 30% of that pressure, I expect that I am injection around 50 - 70 mL / minute of pump operation.

I can feel increase of power, the acceleration is better at the throttle setting that just starts the pump as opposed to just before that setting, but I cannot easily test it with / without the WI working as I do not have an isolation switch on it.
I may have time to add one and reinstall the solenoid valve to prevent syphoning of of the fluid into the inlet manifold.
I may be able to get some testing done then also.
