Dealerships charging for data card?

Post by matthewz108 » Fri 12 Oct, 2018 2:57 pm

I just got off the line with my local stealership, who after a month of trying, told me that I'd be charged $190 per car if i wanted the data cards for my cars. Is this correct? Is there a better or more direct way to get the data cards for pre 1983 vehicles (where the online websites don't work)?

Hi,
afaik - and I read something here in Germany - MB charges 130 Euros for a datacard now. I guess outsourced service company (scans). So imho unfortunately correct.

Yes, it is correct, and confirmed by the Classic Center this week. At the moment, no data cards are being issued, pending the change to the paid service. Glad I have all mine ! $190 x 8 - Mmmm...........

There are going to be some very upset people over this. Not all datacards were well scanned, to the point that they are not legible. I had a 1966 250SE at one stage that I requested a datacard for and it was close to useless. Craig, if you have 8 cars i would imagine that at least one will be poorly scanned.

Or are they going to put them though some kind of fancy scanner that fix's the poor resolution and then produce a nice typed up datacard for the money?? This could be why you now have to pay for them.

Yes, the early ones are pretty poor - 170s, 300b, 220s Ponton, etc but sufficient to work them out. However, I would not be happy to pay $190 for them in their present condition.

The last of the baby boomers talking here...... I know the world has changed but I like the old one and any remnants of it. Everything revolves around the dollar, not that money wasn't important in the past but now it seems money the only motivation and all actions must be referenced to that. So its more crazy to think that until recently they wouldn't charge. A remnant of a time when the company had real pride about what made them different to other companies. What company would provide that sort of service to customers, what company would stand behind parts availability over time etc etc. and the sort of brand loyalty that comes from seeing a purchase as an investment and more than 'just a car'. Listening to other experiences no real differences from one company to another these days. Anyway, I don't think i will lose too much sleep not having data cards for some of my cars - missed opportunity though.

I just tried the online data card search, and it still works (1983 and onwards vehicles), so I think for anything built on or after 1983 might still be available online.
Pity that both my cars are earlier than that...
The only thing in my view they are useful for is trying to restore the car to original factory condition as much as possible, which I suppose then there is some value in having the data card if you can prove the vehicle's originality.

Yes folks it's all true. Datacards which used to be issued free of charge are now big $$$. There is however a bigger issue that is going to cause some drama's.

It would appear that the company the Classic Center has out sourced all the datacards to has 100% control over them. This means that if you want a key for your 1979 450SLC that you first have to go and buy the datacard from the website and then apply for the key. The MB dealers here in Australia are only just realizing this as they have been struggling to get keys made for around a month.

Long story, but we have the said 1979 450SLC at work with the key locked in the boot (don't ask :wall: :wall: ). No problems I think, Ill just order a $40 key. That was over a month ago. It has only been in the last few days that I have joined all the dots together, rang the appropriate people and between all of us worked out why no one has been able to get keys cut for the last 3 weeks. The ability to get key codes has been removed from the key cutting department.....

So the $40 key is now $230.. :angry4: :angry4: :angry4: :argue: :argue: Not happy. So some thinking outside the square. I have all the old datacards on microfiche for all Australian delivered cars from 1965- 1985 and a busted microfiche view (genuine MB unit). Brought it all home tonight and within about 45 minutes I have the key code for the car. Tomorrow's challenge will be to see if they will cut a key, on my instructions as to what the code is?

In the meantime, if you want one, here is the website, but you need to get your local friendly stealership to access it for you.

John,
that's added value, you don't get it. In the past, the owner only got a new key, not he gets a datacard on top! :laughing5: :laughing5:

Surprised, that with said 450SLC there's no card there, e. g. where the tools are or behind the back seats ...

Regards
Thomas

P. S.: I don't have that problem; the Argentine Pickup is not even know in the Classic Centre in Germany :laughing6:

The Classic Center have the data cards for all U S delivered vehicles so tbey will be able to offer keys and radio codes without the need to buy a data card, however I doubt that will apply in Australia.

The rational behind it is that companies such as Ferrari charge for it, so why shouldn't we. Unfortunately, unless they present them in the same manner, I it will all fall flat.

According to what I have found out MB Australia threw out the datacards as MB Germany held them and you just asked when you needed one. :banghead: :banghead:

And if you don't have a data card, one assumes it will cost you the $190 to get it before they can help you.

JG

Have you tried unlocking the boot by removing one the door trims and putting a vac pump on the central locking vac line? From memory when I reassembled by 560 SEC, I'm quite sure this works on the W126 so don't see why it wouldn't on a 107.

After reading your original post I looked through all of the paper work for my 560 and discovered the original data cards in with the operation manual and service book - I also discovered the original owner details. I'm just making some further investigations but he appears to be someone rather famous in the Motor racing scene for the 60's, 70's and 80's. Will keep you all posted. Quite exciting really!

Just a question to John but if it hase a keyed lock why not get a locksmith to unlock it? I had to pick my locks as I have 1 key :angry4: and lock it in the car a few times lately. Lucky it was my trade I guess though I can't find a blank key to cut a new key anywhere.

Lucky it was my trade I guess though I can't find a blank key to cut a new key anywhere.
Hi Pete, the central market locksmith kiosk and goodwood locksmiths have the blanks, if you are really stuck i can grab one and put it in an envelope for you - I walk/drive past both of these places every day on my way to work.
