Recommendations on post 2008 models

Post by ngruzevs » Sat 07 Jul, 2018 8:17 am

I have a friend who is looking to buy a post 2008 Benz, at this stage he's fixed on the W204 chassis. Talking to my mechanic he said buying a pre 2012 C200/C250 was like playing Russian Roulette, due to timing chain issues

I'm hoping the group can help with other recommendations, his criteria is;

- Must be post 2008 (allows flexibility to use for Uber)
- Must have less the 150K on odometer
- Must be less than 25K

I'm hoping AMG might chip in here, can remember he had a thread detailing his experiencing looking for a used MB?

My 2c

I paid $22,000 O.T.R. for my 2009 W204 C280 with 40,000K's on the clock - it now has 52,000K's up - if I tried to sell it I would be lucky to get $18K.

A huge amount of $$$ was spent by MB on the 2011 W204 upgrade - go for one of the post 2011 models. Don't bother with earlier cars there are issues that were fixed with the update.

Benz spent a Billion dollars on the 2012 W212 upgrade - that will tell you something about those early W212 models.

My W204 GPS can't be upgraded. if I did bother to spend the required dollars on the update it only updates to 2012 - nothing later available.

According to overseas Benz forums, the petrol 4 cylinders were still having issues right up to 2014.
The 6 cylinder issues were all corrected by late 2008 early 2009.

Benz have finally integrated the command interface with Apple. If you can get into one of those models with Apple Car Play a host of future issues will not come up.

When I was looking around there were over 200 W204's for sale on carsales and other sites - plenty of picks. There will be plenty more as the trade ins from EFOY sales become available. Novated lease cars are generally serviced properly - at least the cars in the novated company my sister works for are.

The six cylinder Elegance models are far and away better appointed than the Plain Jane 4 cylinders - leather interiors etc etc the Sixes generally come with all the fruit.

Diesel engines are noisy compared to the petrol versions. I have been driving my mates W204 C220 cdi around. Compared to my petrol six the engine noise is high.

If you do get a diesel make sure it's Blue Tec.
Watch John Cadogans video on diesel cars before you buy one.

Any prospective Buy - Of course P.P.I. and get the VIN checked at a Stealership for servicing and recall records

Make sure the transmission fluid has been changed if there are more than 80,000k's - 722.9 transmissions are no longer an easy DIY change.

Drive a hard bargain. If an seller is not prepared to discount walk away - there are plenty of cars around. Some cars sit on the sales site for months before selling because the owner has an unrealistic price on the car. I've seen used W204's sit in the local stealerships yard for months and months.
Some owners are stuck with leased cars and their residual is far more than what they are able to sell the car for. These people are the hardest to deal with. Often these sellers cars require imminent expensive servicing.

It I'd listen to you, I should not consider buying a new car next year :laughing6:

One more thing.
Novated leases. If you qualify or have a tax advantage for one of these. Novated leases can be qualified up to an 8 year old car. So.....Many corporate leases only run for 4 years. This means there should be plenty of 4 year old cars out there that qualify for a novated lease. The new car depreciation has been written off by the new car buyer.
Recently I was looking at a 2014 W212 E400 update with only 15,000k’s on the clock. It was rrp around $62k
This is a massive write down on the original price. If you qualify and have the tax advantage this car would probably easily qualify for a novated lease.

And noting Thomas’s comment. If you are prepared to stick with the technology, you can find a late 2008 - 2009 W211 E350 with less than 100,000 k’s on it for much less than $25,000

? As I mentioned in my 200,000kms post, my 2008 W211 made hardly any problems with all the technical gear. Command, electric seats, linguatronic, seat heating/cooling, dynamic seats .. it has the lot, but this works. Car has now 230,000kms and still going strong.

Thanks chaps

It's an interesting topic, but I think buyer has got most of the power. I recently tried to sell my 2013 VW Golf GTI 6 Speed manual, it was in excellent condition, had full service history and 75K on odometer. I just found it was a jungle out there trying to sell a 5 year old car. maybe it was a mixture of the 6 speed manual, it's a VAG product and interest rates are so low, people are just buying new cars. I eventually accepted a trade in of $19K, wasn't too far off my residual, so wasn't too fussed. I found buyers no longer called or texted, they just send silly messages via the Carsales app, low balling you with offers that were far less than the actual trade in value I got. Anyway this is essentially what you guys have been saying, it's difficult to sell anything used that's out of warranty and it's even more challenging when sellers are putting totally unrealistic selling prices on their vehicles and they just won't budge. Waiting for their selling price or waiting to end of lease also doesn't make sense, as I car that's not under warranty can cost a packet (assuming seller is doing maintenance).

Anyway I spoke to my mate and gave him the options, I think he's now fixed on buying a post 2008 W204 C280, but needs to sell his W126 first (1990 300SE). I told him to focus on selling this, as it is a really good example, so may take some time to sell at the price his looking for ~$10K.

Well,
if this W126 is so good, why does he want to change it to modern problems? A post 2008 W204 is also nearly 10 years old, and the problems will start there ...

It’s a jungle out there because that vast majority of people in this country cant save a $1000 to save their life. Selling anything other 5-6K is a challenge thats not maybe a camry.

I work in a place with pretty high salaries and literally no one in my office has any savings. People think big mortgages are the issue and they are to a degree but their spending habbits are the real problem.

New cars are popular because thats where finance is the easiest which for most people is the only way to get in a car.

When i was looking for a car for my mum in the $5-$7k range man things move there like hotcakes. The amount of “its already sold” phone calls I made was truelly astonishing. Although i didnt look for any euro cars.

I would not sell the 126. I would shut up and be happy and drive it.

if there is stuff to fix in the 126, fix it.

the 126 will not cost as much to own as the 204 will over the next 10 years.

I agree! If the W126 is in good order, why sell it and take on a later model which has much more computerized gadgetry to go wrong.

In fact, was there ever a better Mercedes after the W126? :wav:

If your friend has potentially $25,000 to spend i.e. $15,000 plus $10,000 for the W126.

Just use the potential $15,000 to buy a daily driver modern Buzz box iCar and keep the W126.

F.W.I.W. I have a W204. It's a Jac - Just A Car. - Made for the masses. There is no comparison between a W126 and a W204 - except the newer car has all the modern bells and whistles.

I also have a W211. There is better comparision between the modern E classes and the older W126

Agreed 211/212 far better car in a used car deal, not only that but dealers often have a few very nice ones as tradeins on brand new mb’s

Well chaps, you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink.

I've provided my feedback, stating buy a late model W211 if you're going to change over the W126.

His 300SE W126 is a lovely example, he purchased from John Green 6 years ago.
