Ignition switched 12V power source?

Post by PeterQ » Sun 29 Apr, 2018 2:21 pm

I have a dash-cam that I am trying to connect to a power source that is switched with the ignition key. Previously (on a W220, a W164, and an Audi A6) I've been able fairly easily to find a fuse for something that is switched and use one of the piggy-back fuse holders to get my switched power. But on my W209 I'm getting nowhere fast. Both the radio fuses (#64 under the bonnet, #36 in the end of the dash) seem to have constant power - although the radio switches off the instant I pull the key.
I've tried to get to the power to the 12V outlet in the "ashtray", but my WSM goes in to deep detail about removing the ashtray but not the storage tray that's there on my car, and it's not obvious where any clips/screws are.
Anybody succeeded in this?

Radio will have two power sources, one constant and the other switched. Keep looking.

Off the top of your head, what colour is the switched wire? I can get to them, but after market head unit confuses things a bit.

Finally found out how to remove the ashtray/storage tray thing with the cigarette lighter/12V power outlet. Previous attempts failed, damn thing would not move. Checked the leads, confirmed which one switched on/off with the ignition (off AND key removed), and ran a tap from that to the end of the dash where the fuses are, set up a two outlet USB plug there. Now the dash-cam and my preferred navigation unit are both plugged in with wires discretely hidden.

Well done! It is nice when it looks like like the car was designed to have the new additions.
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

Had the same set up on the ML350, S430, A6, and Cross 6, but this was the hardest to figure out and get to.
