Engine transplants

Post by Jrhendo »

Has anybody tried to put a M119.970 into an early SL or SLC? There's one for sale that tempts me a little if it's possible.

Pros and cons of the idea?

I just saw this one that 'slipped through to the keeper' about a year ago. I personally know of a M119 going into W126 and W124 but not 107. Knowing what sort of power some people are getting out of the M117 and knowing that will fit fairly easily, that would be my choice. Kimrh in WA I think is our local expert on what you can squeeze out of the 560 and you can search his posts. The lighter alloy motor is a bonus to the early car that had the cast engine. To fit a sedan 560 you need oil filter, sump, exhaust manifolds off an alloy engined 107 (eg. 380) or able to modify. I don't know of any available off the shelf headers for 107 in RHD - plenty of people that have made very expensive custom one offs but nobody that has made a jig or had them computer profiled so they can be replicated.... which is a shame. But sounds like you are on your way to US with a 450 - just out of interest have you seen Stewart Bowes car from adelaide that has one a string of high level events? https://www.facebook.com/groups/5745637 ... SEARCH_BOX Mega dollar build as I understand it and he chose to fit the cast 450 - apparently has his reasons, I just don't know what they are.... but you certainly can't argue with the results.

I would suggest that the M119 deck height would be too much to squeeze into a W107. Those M119 heads are enormous.

I’ve seen the build notes on Stewart Bs car. Very impressive. Also the Jackson one that came 3rd in the 2016 Peking Paris (mind you, we came 6th in 2019 in a Volvo...). There’s also a guy in California, Kevin Kemper, who’s got an interesting (unfinished) blog on rebuilding/modifying a 026 into a serious rally car.

I’m currently staying with the 4.5 - largely because a timing chain replacement has turned into an engine rebuild while I’ve been away!

I would be interested in any of those build notes / blog etc. I've only seen pictures and hearsay from others. I have a 107 slc shell that I have longer term plans for as a competition car. I have a 13yo that is super keen and we have been working through a 'free' W116 to use in khanacross this year and a 15yo I would like to encourage more and expand his life away from a 'screen'. We will triple enter the W116 this year in events. But next year and beyond would be good to get the slc going.

Kevin Kemper: https://slc4dirt.wordpress.com/comment- ... omment-185

Stuart Bowes: I couldn’t find what I saw originally, but here’s something: https://issuu.com/hi-techmedia/docs/ral ... a131323/16

Jackson’s, Adam and Murray: again I couldn’t find etc, but if you go to Facebook, google Adam Jackson and on 16 Apr 16, there’s a post with some photos of the build.

If I find anything else, I’ll post it.

If you haven’t seen it, this has some interesting bits: http://www.californiaclassix.com/archiv ... _c145.html

And here’s the Jackson write up I was looking for: http://pp2016.com/preparation/

I also found the link for Stuart Bowes’ car, but it was on an old Classic Outback Trial page and is now dead. You may be able to email Phil Bernadou (COT director) and ask him to resurrect it. Or Stuart directly. I think he’s SA also.

Craig,
I forgot I came across this. Pure SLC-porn. The engine is cheating a bit, but heh, it's a rally car. And a beautiful one.

Going to sound like heresy - but falcon six. Height is probably going to be the main issue in getting one to fit into an 107 chassis.

Otherwise I'd sleeve it, and look at custom Ross Pistons. Not cheap but at least get some parts...
