A few months back I had the very good fortune to purchase a 1959 220s that had been sitting for thirty plus years in a nice dry shed in Sydney. It is pretty much rust free apart from minor surface rust here and there, The engine was seized and showed signs that someone intended to remove and replace it. (it came with a spare engine that is from a Finnie by the looks of it) I freed up the engine (ATF poured down spark plug holes) and after discovering that a previous owner had the valve timing incorrect, I finally got it running. It sounds pretty good all considered. My problem is that the key has been lost in the passing of time. I removed a door handle and got a number from that but it was not the same as the ignition barrel. I then resorted to using a 'snake camera' and found a ten digit number on the back of the ignition barrel. (I really don't want to have to remove the dash or the barrel unless I really have to) A couple of Auto locksmiths have told me that this number is likely to be a part number and not the key number and couldn't help me. I have tried Marshall's of Parramatta and they too couldn't help.
Does anyone know how I can get a key cut using the number on the back of the barrel and perhaps the VIN number?
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Re: Ignition key
You lucky bastard!
I have no idea to convert the number into a proper key.
The only thing I can say is that I have a Finnie for wrecking and I could sell you the ignition barrel + keys for a friendly sum.
Dunno if they are similar.

Re: Ignition key
Assuming the barrel hasn't been changed since 1959, I would think you could order a key from the dealer.
I did this with a 1969 W114 250 many years ago.
Back then, the dealer kept parts. I gave him the vin over the counter. He walked to the back and produced a key, presumably from stock.

Re: Ignition key
Thanks everyone. Bart, I'll try and find out if the Finnie one is the same and get back to you. Thanks for the offer, much appreciated.

Re: Ignition key
Hi , the door & bootlid keys , ignition key and petrol tank key are three different items . Same for Fintails ( Heckflossen ) .
You should be able to order them from the dealer against the chassis number ( although proof of ownership and identity will be required ) .
If your dealer is less than helpful , there are people in Germany who supply blanks and/or cut to number .
