Lowered springs

Post by Anto »

Hi all, new to the forum, have just recently purchased a 280E as my new daily driver.

Just wondering if anybody can advise whether aftermarket lowered springs are available to suit the W114? I only want to lower the car a little bit, maybe an inch or so, and also hopefully fix a slight list towards the driver's side.

Any other options I could consider? Changing the spring pads for eg? Springs from a different model Merc?

Not sure if there is anybody local that can reset springs, and ideally if I do lower the car I'd like to keep all the components to be able to swap it back to standard.

Your in Canberra so the forum sponsors (number above) you will find a great resource. If you want a nice riding car and lowered then I think you will find Eibach or Hand R to fit and if you google that will be able to check catalogues. Some people cut bits of coil off the end but it stuffs the ride up and makes it harsh. I think King springs will make stuff up if you give dimensions, but i think you are better sticking to the tried and tested manufacturers. But MB spares is very familiar with your model having built a rally car in that model and sure they will have some thoughts.

Lowered springs are a very contentious topic, especially on a MB forum. So here goes!

I found from a similar site in the UK that those H&R springs are no longer available even though they are still advertised. You may have more luck though.
They are also bloody expensive! By the time you land them it will be around $500+ at a guess.

Now for the divisive bit. Cutting 1 coil from each spring is absolutely OK in my experience. I gave mine the chop over a year ago and they are going strong.
The only downside is you have to be a little more careful over spoon drains etc with the low hanging exhaust. Bump handling etc is not noticeably reduced esp on soft whitewalls.
The springs are so long that one coil is hardly making any difference to the spring rate.
I was told by my mechanic that you shouldn't take of more than a coil, which equates to approx a 25mm drop as you will negatively effect the suspension geometry.
I think it gives a little negative chamber at the rear, the front can be adjusted. There are offset bush kits available to fix rear camber but they are expensive ($400).
It may be possible to get them made up for less.

Good luck!

What do you mean by a "camber kit"?

I've seen their camber kit on their website. You must have got a good deal as they quoted me $400. All it is is an offset bush. It might be possible to get a pair made for less than that.
