These are great cars, but I just cannot seem to bring myself to part with the $100K + it takes to buy one, or the $10k you have to shell out every time one of the gadgets breaks.

Unlike most old Mercs, the 600 will remain the provence of the well -heeled.

One of my favourite old Mercs - would love one!
Think that they turn 50 this year too.

Yes, 50 this year as they were unveiled in 1964.
$100,000 doesn't get you a good one, but a very average one. To use the words of the 600 man himself, Karl Middlehauve, "these are a $200,000 car, buy one for $20,000 and it will cost you $180,000 to get it roadworthy ".
Each and every one of the 2500 built was hand assembled individually and Only Australia got a series of 600's on Spec ,as ordered by the franchise . The only time that ever happened.
They are an amazing car to drive ,quite capable of cruising at 120 MPH and handling like a sports car. Unlike Rolls Royces and Caddys of the same era, which were just big cars, the 600 was designed as whole from the beginning to be the very best you could buy.
They still are considered by the very rich to be the only car to own . One member of the M100 group bought a 600 Pullman to carry around his large extended family in the USA,rather than risk their safety in a people mover . It was pimped out with all the technology suitable to keep children occupied on long trips in the back.
Every so often, one will turn up that belonged to some hated despot somewhere , the latest being the Ex Sadaam Hussein Pullman landau which has been kept in the basement of the Petersen Museum in LA. It will never be put on display they say. I dont know why not ,various ex Hilter cars are on display or offered for sale around Europe although he never owned a car.. :laughing6: :laughing6:

However I was there with my little 737 Idi Amin w115 220d.

Following on to Mercmad's comment from 2013, I saw yesterday that the ex-Sadaam Hussein Pullman landaulet is still in the basement of the Petersen Museum in LA. The basement is actually called "The Vault", where a supplementary (higher priced than the 'standard' Museum entry fee) entry fee is charged to view the additional museum cars in storage.
As it is the storage area, most of the cars do not have any placard describing the car. however, the guides are very helpful. As it wasn't busy when I visited, I lucked on a 'personal tour' explaining all the Mercedes stored in the vault (Marco's bulletproof 500SEL W126 with 'additional' gear, 300SL Gullwing owned by the chairman, a tired 280SE W113 coupe) from a young guide who was very knowledgeable about cars, including Mercedes because his mother once owned a Pagoda but sold it when prices of that car were still low.

The Petersen Automotive Museum is advertised as "One of the world's largest automotive museums". Is worthwhile for any car-nut to visit.

The bonnet star was stolen from the 600 - the hole in the bonnet exists.
