The 2011 Phillip Island Classic Races 18-20 March

Post by AndrewsSL/SEL »

I've always loved the classic car racing and one day will go to the Goodwood Festival of Speed but until then this event at Phillip Island look like it will be satisfy any cravings for historic racing cars. The event has original 935/78 "Moby Dick" Porsche, Ford GT40, Sauber Mercedes C9 and a ton of other sensational cars. [Unfortunately the Silk Cut Jags and Mantra won't be there :boohoo: ]

I'm definately going [with or without the Mrs and son] and I wondered if anyone wants to meet up at Tooradin or Pearcedale for a cruise down to the Island.

Hi Andrew - I was planning to go but as usual things are closing in around me. Had an invite to Winton celebrating 90 years of Amilcar and the family might not stretch to both - Never know. A mate of mine will be there with his lotus 7, I don't think his Elfin mono is back together. He rents a house over there and the plan was for me to take the week off, drive over with the family and then escape on the practice and race days. If it looks like I am going will PM my mobile number. He was an earlier owner of my AMG and always pressures me to enter it in regularity - but want to get more track miles here first. Would love to drive the island circuit though. Would like to do the AROC 6 hour one day and maybe have a team of Benzes, there are a few of them now and regularity evens up the playing field a bit.

Andrew,

I have entered my CE in the 'Shannons Cavalcade' to this event, which leaves from their Warrigal Rd. showroom in convoy of about 100 cars. Send me a PM if you'd like me to give you a call along the way, as we'll no doubt be going via Tooradin.

Wish I was going.
I made it there three or four years back, great circuit, good atmosphere, friendly crowds and lots of interesting old machinery. The island is a nice place to visit too, we rented a cabin near Cowes, but for anyone on the Mornington Peninsula or anywhere south of Melbourne it is an easy drive down.
Highly recommended, and I keep hoping to get back, maybe next year.

BUMP..it's this Sunday, and as my mate is racing his Cooper Climax (Bruce McLaren's 1964 Targa-Winner) I'm leaving the family at home & heading down solo... thus if anyone wants a lift or even 1 x free entry, please let me know as my Shannons entry includes 2 passes for Sunday only.

The good news is I got extensive work done on the 560 this SA long weekend and finally got the 280s advertised.... but the bad news is this just isn't going to fit in this year with work and just going for the weekend would not make me popular. Also keener to get to Winton in May and it is a bit of a trade off in 'family bonus points' not to go. Sure you will have a great time and can recommend it to anyone - huge array of cars and no better track for viewing and action.

Anyone planning on Winton in may?

Craig,

Saw your 280s on carsales the other night and I must say I was drooooling at the photos....W108's will always be my soft spot !!!

Winton in May, yes I will most probably head up there, as one of my best mates with an 'enviable' (inherited) collection (Cooper Climax, MG K3 and Bugatti 37B, just to name a few...) is always running at least one or two of his cars.....Would be good to put a face to a name !!

Cheers

Gee there can't be many K3's around - supercharged aren't they? I remember a blue one that came over for vintage collingrove many years ago but cant put a face to the owner.

Yes I think the condition of the 280 won't be an issue but no doubt I would have had a bit more interest if it was a 3.5 in that condition - but then the price would be different. But I think if someone is interested enough to get behind the wheel we should be right.

But will let you and others know closer to the mark. got the Amilcar back together last night and will head to the shed in a minute to press the starter and see if I have sorted it. Old cars - the timing gear drive that works the maggy had developed wear on the shaft and noticed it moving quite a bit and would throw out the timing, so with a new shaft (amazing what people have lying around for such rare old cars!) I hope we are back in business. Shocking really that it hasn't run since 6yo Tom was born - seized it on the bay to birdwood when Jo was still in hospital with Tom - cant wait to take the boys for a run.

Yes, they are blown...They only made 33 K3's plus 3 prototypes (they were built to win the Mille Milla ) Phil Brady used to own the blue one in ADL, but it now lives in Melbourne. One of the prototypes lives also in Melbourne, and belongs to a member of my Ski Club.

My mates was 'the rabbit' in the 1933 Mille Milla (ie: it blew it's g'box but wore out the opposition) and the other 2 x K3's in the race crossed the line on the podium ...if my memory serves me correct??

It was the Mille miglia car that was here I now recall - guy was saying how they flew him and his car over there for a reinactment event. We have some interesting cars here in Australia!

Actually Phil's car was owned by Prince Bira of Siam (now Thailand) and yes, Phil and Adam (my mate) were 'sponsored' by a wealthy Victorian MG Collector, who just happens to have built a K3 replica from scratch (to the tune of about $200k +) The trip included return shipment to/from the UK for their cars and 2 drivers and 2 co-drivers flights........the drive from London & back in 2 x K3's looks spectacular from their photos !!!..in return, a few 'measurements' of a real K3 were taken !!!..nice work if you can get it
