50 th Anniversay of the Pagoda

Post by treedoc »

A group of 113 Pagoda owners from Qld, NSW & Vic are trying to organise a cellabration in Sydney in March 2013 of the 50 th anniversay of the launch of what is arguabily the second most recognisable Benz built since WW2.
March 1963 at the Geniva Motor show saw the 113 unvailed.
Please note at this stage this is not an official MB Club event however naturately we would welcome their participation one of our aims is to bring together a minium of 50 Pagodas at some iconic place in Sydney for a photo cession.
We therefore request interested parties particularly Pagoda owners register their interest here or on
http://www.mbcnsw.org.au/forum/index.ph ... 553.0.html [MBCNSW Forum carrently shut down.]
or they can contact me at

Geoff,

I don't think you would be accused of cross-posting if you also gave this a mention in the forum specifically for the W113 at viewforum.php?f=12 ,especially considering that forum is visible to all whereas this one is only visible to those registered and logged in.

Hard to imagine that in just a few years the pagoda SL will be turning 50. It's still such a desirable and stylish design and one that many relate to when thinking of Mercedes roadsters. To be able to get a gathering of numerous Aussie W113 owners together to celebrate such an occasion would be fantastic. Keep us all up to date with planning as it progresses.

By the way, some nice pagoda photos you posted there too. Got any more?

Greg,

Here's a couple of images of Graham Downe's car and his two daughters we expect all four to be at the March 2013 event.

Please encourage any Pagada Owners that you know to post a comment and pictures of the loves of their life

On Sunday October the 10 last year at around 5.30 am, Rob Waddel, Graham Downs and myself were scouting for a suitable locations around Sydney Harbour for the planned 50 anniversary meet, see images below.

Later on the way to the MBCNSW Concourse we were treated to a demo of how NSW Police do not discriminate, see last image

Now that MBCNSW have shut down their web sight any member of this forum who would like to take part in the 2013 meet should register their interest here along with a picture of their car.

I will be coming as a visitor.
Already put it in my diary as this car is at the top of my list by a long long long way of the car I would most like to own and it has been since I was a young lad.
Seeing that many in one place would make the mouth water.
Cheers

Always hard to get to these things with a young family and all that but will do my best. Great to get advance notice and now the tricky bit is keeping it on the radar. Paul Charal from Adelaide with a mid blue (ex sleeping beauties i believe) 230sl is a likely contender and we could do a roady perhaps. Also Robert Welch had one. Scratching my head though to think of any others that i know of in SA. Have a while to keep my eyes open for others though. Interesting there are only 3 i know of in the club but there could be more. Can mention it at a club meeting if i ever i make it to one! Mine is a red manual 280, need to find or take a photo.

Just been looking for a pic - thousands of the kids but none of the red baby! Can drag it out of the shed and take some but this is actually the only photo i could find in the wedding file and obstructed by a tree. Keeping my Amilcar company on this occasion but the pagoda got to do the great ocean road for the honeymoon.

Everyone was making comments about people with wedding cars but me the car nut wasn't having any cos we got married at our house, and it was the photographer who got me to get a couple out of the garage for photos but they stayed for the reception.

Hey, tell us more on the Amilcar.
I always liked them, as well as the obvious Bugattis, but I am working on something to rival both ( ? ! ? ).
Anyway, it is good to have three years notice of the Pagoda bash, maybe by then I can afford one of those at least,
(probably a left-hander from California though), so I can plan ahead.

It's a 1924 CS, or thereabouts, but no history so it is hard to say - it has all the right bits anyway like the short CS chassis and suspension, firewall, body is a very closely made replica from a ridgy didge Duvall body. With vintis so much has happened over the years that it is hard to know what is 'original' or not and if a period say Oz body or something knocked up somewhere in between. Main stray from standard is not visible in that it has the late 60mm bore of the CGS that boosts from 800cc to 1100cc, which might not sound like much but a fair percentage and when I can pick the body up by myself, the whole thing doesn't weigh a heap. Really fun car and great for taking you back to another time. Built to go not to stop with two tiny drums on the back only. Good for more than 60mph which I know from driving from Pt Augusta to Pt. Pirie (100km) in 55 minutes - long story!

Not sure if they are still for sale but I was told relatively recently of 4 for sale, all needing work including i think a CGS (had front brakes and oil pump engine) and might have even been a CGSS with lower chassis and a 4 speed gearbox - very high tech but these are the ones most successful in racing and bring a premium (although one like mine won the 1924 Bol'dor). None were particularly cheap (30 something K for one that needed total rebuild) but people can get keener to sell in times when people don't want to spend much on old cars, but then one ad over in the UK or europe would probably see them all snapped up at huge prices compared to here.

From memory you were building a model T? There are some very quick period modded ones - one here in SA with a different head or something, yellow one and some crazy different head or something from memory

A cartoonist friend Tony Lurie has come up with some suggested designs for signs/badges that could be used to promote, attached to cars for the anniversary. any comments / suggestions / alternatives please.

apart from the first, the others are very Sydney centric, if that is what you want...

perhaps something along the lines of the first but with the outline of Australia?

Good point Ross, but then as an Adelaidean I can see a couple of reasons like that they are probably two of the best known internationally icons of Australia (eg if you had the 'rock' it might look like a blob and not instantly recognisable) and also it is happening in Sydney. But great way to do it, put it up here and listen to comments.

I was going to say that I would like to see the image of the pagoda more dominant and clear, say just one and bigger, but important to have the star which is instantly recognisable if the image is not immediately clear. great start though and I found another Adelaide pagoda and just need to get on to the guy to give contact details.
