Hi all, bought (stole if judged by price) on Sunday-for the ball 'n' chain.
'87 230E, 251K (rebored and tranny o/haul at 200K). Two owners, not concourse LOL-but bloody close-almost unmarked Arctic White duco and Date MB-Tex.
History/logbooks/data card, 7 months rego, RWC, brand new Dunlops, recent service.
Drove it home (380 KLMS) at 110-120 klm per hour and it was perfect-no rattles, no squeaks, no noise-except for the Becker Pacific!
Poverty pack though-no fast glass or sunroof but this is a plus for me as they always fail in the open position when raining don't they? And who cares anyway; the missus will be driving it (when she gets her licence)!

Faults? Small trim items such as the plastic cover plate at base of B pillar broken, 'blown bulb' warning light stays on, small cracks in veneer finish near T-bar. No cruise control :(
That's it really. Not much to whinge about is it?

Oh and by the way-the seller was an absolute delight to deal with which was welcome, as my recent posts have outlined recent attempted purchases!

I'm still in the hunt for a 300SE W126 for myself but after driving this I'm thinking a W124 300CE might be nice! But I still reckon the interiors are a bit on the small side for my liking!

Update: I've driven this daily for two weeks now and think it's even better than I first reported. Quiet and torquey, and hard to believe it's a 4 cyl. Drives more like a small 6!
Averaged 9.8 l per 100 klms on the last tank; that was with a 50/50 urban/highway split! An old woman would no doubt have better economy from it as I do floor it sometimes; gotta blow those cobwebs away!
Has an annoying slight rattle sometimes from inside the l/h/s front door (which I'll fix one day) but I'm the only one to whinge about it (I'm overly picky some say).
Long story short-no regrets and I don't wanna give it to the missus now. Haha.

Hi there,

I've had this 1986 300E for a month now, it drives really well around town and on country drives. All I've had to replace is the heater tap, fuel pump and fuel filter so far. The sunroof doesn't work unfortunately, I hear movement up there but no sunroof movement. The car also came with later model rims with SUMITOMO SRIXON4 P215/55R16 91H M&S tyres. Interior has a few little areas to be looked at in the future but all in all it's a tidy car.

Here's a few pics of the car at my friends workshop. Notice his 1995 E220 in the background, his wife also has an 1995 E220.

That's a nice clean-looking early 124. The later style 8-hole alloy rims complement it; though it is unusual that these are 16" rather than the standard 15".

Here's my pride and joy. Considering it was only $3.5k and 22 years old, it's in pretty good nick and the paintwork is exceptional. Rego is now ACT.

It looks to be the same colour as yours, or very near. Next thing will be a set of either AMG or Lorinser rims. Love the thick five spoke designs (AMG 2 I believe).

Well I am back in Dubai with a new contract, so needed a daily driver.

Picked up this lovely old Nautilus Blue / Grey leather 500E in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Fastidious Frenchman has owned it for the past six years, so it has an extensive file with receipts from the dealer, and all of the usual issues have been dealt with.

Unfortunately it has lived out on the street in Abu Dhabi, so needs a bit of loving in the cosmetics department.

Car is mechanically excellent with the original running gear still in place, it does have a little bit of rust around the sunroof opening which could be a potential pain in the arse to repair - this would normally be a deal breaker for me but at the equivalent of A$3000..... who's complaining!

UPDATE::

Ok after some hunting I found a set of 8 hole wheels from an SL500 and had them fitted up, then lucked upon a set of staggered AEROII 17x8.5 and 17x10 AMG rims that need a refurb but should suit the car well.

Dropped the car off for panel and paint yesterday, little bit of upholstery work to do and a sagging headliner to repair, they told me 30 days and I will get the car back - enough time to get a H&R spring kit and get those wheels sorted out.

Very happy with progress thus far, also planning to revert to the amber front and rear indicators and put the trunk lid back to the way the early 124 should look with the black trim and sans the number plate indent (like althon's silver car further down this page).

More pics as the work starts

So what's the speed limit in those parts of the world? Or do you just pay the cop depending on speed?

Urban sideroads are mostly 80k, the main highway (Sheikh Zayed Rd) is posted 120 and the cameras go at 130 at the moment until you get down towards the abu dhabi border... never seen one flash down there and the traffic seems to flow at about 140.

The backroad I take to the office is an 8 lane freeway with little traffic and cameras that go off at 160 :angel10:

Yes, you are right. But a 500E (later badged as an E500) is more than that. The 124.036 was a collaborative effort between MB and Porsche. It runs the 5 litre four cam M119 V8 from the R129 500SL crammed into the W124 engine bay. Being lighter than the R129, the performance of 124.036 was superior. There were numerous modifications to the body including enlarged transmission tunnel to allow everything to fit. The body had wider wheel arches front and rear to fit either the larger 16" x 8" wheels or optional 17" x 8.25" wheels from the 190E 2.5-16 Evo II. Interior was "Sportline" bucket seats front and rear for four passengers. Long range high beam lights replaced the fog lights in the headlight units (fog lights were fitted low in the front apron). These rate highly on my dream car list (along with AMG versions of the 124 and Evo versions of the W201) but sadly (like the W201 Evos) they were never manufactured in RHD. Search the web and you will find plenty of info and photos of these desirable performance sedans.

Only problems having currently is a leaky air-cond (Summer is near :banghead: ) , a sagging headliner, a sticky sunroof, probably change the perished old rubber covers and . I think that's acceptable as I only paid $4.9K on her

500E has emerged from the paint shop, waiting on a few trim items and a sunroof part to complete the picture. From here it goes to the upholstery man to have the headliner repaired, then I can get the car passed for registration.

Sorry about the blurry pics, I will have some proper shots taken once it is all done.

It's a '90 300E in awesome condition. It's a jap import and has been really well looked after, only done 155,000k's. I picked it up for $5300 I think it was a great buy! It's all stock except I think it has wider than standard tyers (has 205's instead of 195's), and it has been fitted with a new MP3 CD player.

Why do people leave the Japanese number plate holders on these cars. Makes it such a dead give away that it is an import.

I have recently imported a vehicle from Japan (oooo wonder what it is) and the first thing I did was to remove all the things that identified it as a Jap spec vehicle. Not that I are trying to hide the identity, just that I don't want it to stand out.

 Hi fellow W124 enthusiasts. I just brought my dream car. A 1991 300E with the SOHC engine (in my opinion the Single Overhead Cam or SOHC engine is more durable than the Double Overhead Cam or DOHC units and offers better quality and 'the original 300E experience'. Most all owners of both engined cars I have spoken to agree and two very learned MB mechanics told me they are better units for a number of reasons, the main ones being longivity and lower underbonnet temperatures than E320 (DOHC), E280 (DOHC) and 300E-24V (DOHC) units, causing less problems long term. MB mechanics also tell me the SOHC units are quieter than the DOHC units.

Anyway, I am very excited with my new purchase and find. I have been looking for one of these cars for 3 years in this condition. SOHC 300E's in update form with repeat front guard indicators in 3 litre spec seem to be fairly rare (most I have seen are DOHC 24-V, SOHC 2.6 or the 'stay away' import-SOHC 3.0 cars) and in this condition with low kms and in a decent colour to boot (I like darker colours and silvers), they prove not to come around too often. In my opinion this is the last and most modern over engineered performance sedan in the world, offering the perfect blend of extreme quality, practicality, performance, classics and class.

It was a one owner deceased estate car that was advertised about a week ago on carpoint by the daughter of the man who had owned it from new at 10.30pm. I brought it at 1am the following morning. A few people had made offers higher than mine the next day, I was told, though because I demonstrated my passion for this particular W124 marque, the lady selling it asked her elderly mother who said she had to sell it to me, as I had offered first and because of my genuine passion for the specific series of car. I paid $10,000 CASH for the car. That was what they asked for and thats what I paid. No questions asked... As far as I am concerned it is a bargain. I would have paid $15,000... Easy...

It taught me that when good cars come up it is a meat market out there to land them- dont muck around. Do your research, study the add and adds, pre think and ask all your questions in one phone call, MAKE the seller think your for real, put an internet deposit on the car, then go and look at it. I sold my 2003 BMW 750iL V12 a couple of years ago with a view to getting another 300E, but in 3 litre spec- I would drive my 1991 300E 2.6 up to where I stored the BMW to take it for a blast on remote NT desert roads with open speed limits and when I got back into my 300E I loathed the 750, and I prayed to God I would one day find an immacualate example of a 300E in 3 litre SOHC updated form. I took a day off work and flew from Sydney to Melbourne last Friday to buy it and to organize closed private transport of the car back to Sydney.

Now the car- I have seen alot of 300E's in my endevours and I must say this one is pretty good- It is by far the best one I could find in about 5 years of looking all up. I even employed car brokers to find me one, which was pointless and I dont recommend. It has original dark gunmetal metallic brown paintwork (a very peculiar colour that I like). There is no rust whatsoever. All the power options work. The interior is spotless and the wood has not one crack in it. Interestingly it has different and more luxurious leather seats to the 2.6 updated cars, forget the MB-Tex, and curtained texture leather trim on the doors, more like that found in the E320 W124 convertibles. It has done 126,000kms with full service and storage history. The rockercover is like new, there is no For King and country black paint on it and the airfilter still has the orange shock caution sticker on it! The indicator stalks operate like new and the instrument needles are bright orange- even in broad daylight. The doors open and close like new. OK it does have some scratches on it which you would expect for a car this old (3 significant but small ones in all) with others being very light, which I hope will polish out and that the others I can get professionally touched up because I am against re-painting pannels unless necessary because in my opinion it can be detrimental to originality and quality. Also the 'Mercedes Star' and rear 300E boot lid badge and boot lid star will need replacing too if they dont polish up- If anyone can recommend someone in South West Sydney to help in this department that would be great? Oh, and the cars original apart from a pioneer stereo and an integrated car phone and remote locking/ alarm system.

This 300E is a rare and legendary find that will be shedded and cherished by me for years to come. When my girlfriend and the seller, amazed at my eagerness to buy the car, told me I was mad spending this sort of money on an almost 20 year old car and then some to bring it back to new condition and especially when, not to appear snobby, I could have afforded a 2006 series E320, I told them, "Well some people collect dolls, so I cant be that mad!" I have posted some pics for your interest. I hope to share the car and my passion for all W124 series cars with you at upcomming events and I hope I could help any prospective W124 series buyers! Hey I am now looking at selling my 1991 300E 2.6 Silver Grey, with thousands in receipts (Keep an eye on the advertising section of this forum for more details). Dr. Know

Will be my ride for Easter (and until I sell it), might take awhile to sell this one for some reason... :D :D

:stop: Sorry but you dont sell an 320CE Sportline with 60,000kms... Do you?? Seeing as the pic was taken in 'the centre of the known universe' I was wondering if it was let out by our PM to visiting heads of state and consular officials as a weekend car, it looks that good.

One of my all time favourites. One of MB's finest models with lots of tweaks by Porsche. Only the option of manual transmission would have further increased the appeal for me. Of course it would also have helped if they had been manufactured in RHD so they could be sold and registered here. I'd have one as my daily drive for sure! Enjoy!

I've just bought a "94 W124 E280 in Grey. I don't know the actual colour name. It's very straight but lots of fine scratches. I took it to a panel shop and they said most of it will buff out no problems, so thats good news.

It's got 223000 kms on it and was owned by and old couple from new. They have had wool seat covers on it since new. I'm probably going to leave them on because they are so comfy.

I plan to put some wheels on it and maybe lower it a little and tint the windows and thats about it. I'm concerned though, that the wheels and suspension change will ruin the ride and make it too hard. Has anyone had experience with suspension changes. Obviously you've all had a go at wheels. I am undecided between 17's or 18's.

I'd be grateful for any guidance.

Regards

Two months ago, I bought this 1996 E220 Coupe, one owner, 125,000kms traveled, from a friend of a friend.

Despite being well aware of the pitfalls of buying 1993 - 1996 MBs, this one appealed to me and came at a very good price. Naturally, the dreaded wiring loom issue reared it's ugly head almost immediately and also naturally the ECU got spiked too just to complicate matters. :boohoo:

For anybody who's wondering what happens when the wiring loom goes, this car actually ran perfectly well for 45 mins. before it would start to surge when cruising and cut out at idle. Surprisingly and thankfully, there was never a problem getting it to start again. On top of this, the air con would stop working when the engine temp reached 90 degrees. Sorting this out cost me just over $4,000, but my total cost including the purchase price is still well under Redbook's price range, so it's all good.

I only got the car back from Lingane Motors (highly recommended!) yesterday and I've started giving it the full car spa treatment. I got home from work tonight and clay barred, paint cleaned, polished and waxed all the exterior painted surfaces. Tomorrow, I'll go round and detail the door shuts and fiddly bits.

Anyway, here are the pix. Enjoy!

Retirement??? I hope not! Me and a mate have only just discovered these guys.

Peter was running the show so far as this car and two of my mate's went, but I know that Derek did step in while Peter used up some annual leave at one point.

Greetings One & All,
I recently bought my first MB, a classic 88 300 CE Coupe with modifications.
Thus far I am enjoying immensely searching forums (and eBay) around the world for hints, tips and the odd part to add to my car which I first saw 5 years ago.
"Fritz" as I have nick-named him, has spent several years as a display vehicle for a well known after market european vehicle after market parts seller in Melbourne so it quite possible some of you have seen this car in its earlier life in person or on pages of the website. I look forward to chatting with you guys in the future !
Anyway in all it's glory and with it's recently added new wheels and tyres....here is "Fritz" !

Hi.... It's been a while since I've been here. Forgot my password etc... etc...

Would love to show you my new love. I bought it in Jan this year. It came up on Carsales and I had to have it. I had always wanted one since they first came out, but as an 19yo, that wasn't likely!
The colour scheme- both the the duco and the leather- were exactly what I had wanted back in the day. To get the 24 valve as well was a surprising extra.
She drives very well, but I think the trans needs a service. Just put new Continetal tyres on it, and this has improved the ride. Not to mention stability at cornering.
She also has the original radio/cassette player that works. I refuse to change it- at night the lighting colour scheme matches on the whole dash. So elegant!
I hope that you like her too....

Thanks grr...

In relation to the trans, there's a delay with shifting up gears... Sometimes prolonged with a labouring feel as the speedo goes up. It's not that annoying, but it does bug me at times. I could use the semi-manual option more often (which is fun), but it's just tiring when driving home after work... Great on weekends though! I'll get it done soon. It's only about 2000k's off from it's next service.

As for the door... I know! Not high on the list of priorities at the moment.... Couple of other gremlins to get at first... Just as well we love our cars!!

re the tranny - I was fishing as to wether you had the dreaded reverse gear gremlin (B3 clutch) that appears at about 200K. Lucky for you then!
BTW is it a state secret the price that you paid? If not could you PM me? I'm trying to settle on a fair price for mine as I think I may have to sell soon :pale:

Howdy folks,

I posted a quick intro in the new members section, but that forum doesn't allow pics so here they are.

The car is a 1987 230TE that has done 200,000km but had a full engine recondition 40,000km ago. Otherwise it's a pretty original car (except for the wheels and exhaust of course which were done by the previous owner). I realise it won't be to everyone's taste, but I like it and especially the irony in those twin pipes!

Good & Bad:
Colour is Blue-Black (V.good!) but unfortunately the bonnet lacquer is cracked and dull.
It has an electric sunroof but manual windows.
The wood gear-lever has to go.
Just need to sort out the intermittent low-power problem and the wagon will be perfect for my impending new family!

There's a woman that parks on my street in Marrickville occasionally.
She has an immaculate W124 300E.
64,000kms only.
I was talking to her about it and I wrote my name and phone number and if she ever decides to sell ring me first.
She's had the car since new and was adamant she would never sell it.
Anyway she's got a slip of paper in her glove box with my phone number just in case she changes her mind.

My 22y/o mistress is a buetifull deep red 1990 300E 24v with 180k on the clock. I chose a sedan over the CE becuase I have two teenage boys, need to use the back seat.

I replaced the Becker radio with a new Pioneer with IPOD connectivety (this is my daily drive), probably a shame becuase the previous owner spent a bit of time and money sourcing the original radio.......

I found a set of 17" 245mm paws on E-Bay of a 2004 E280, with Perilli P-Zeros (95%) all round. Got them on E-Bay for a song !!!
I replaced the front springs with more stiffer Pedders, result is the front end is very stable, and I dont suffer from guard strike on my 245mm tyres. I will definately be replacing the rear springs shortly.

I replaced the front amber indicators with clear ones, I think it makes the whole front look a lot cleaner.

I had the driver's seat bolstered with extra padding as it was a little tired, it worked very well.

Some dingbat ran into the rear of her recently, messed up his VL Commadore pretty bad, I had trouble closing the boot lid for a while but a freiend helped me to panel beat it back so that I can close the boot, that will do untill she goes in to the panel beaters in April (6 week waiting list!!!). The plus side is my rear bumper was looking a bit secong hand and will get a respray!.

Anyway enjoy...I do.

Not having ever driven a 230TE before, and only having a 230E as basis for comparison, I'd say the sound of those twin pipes is pretty much exactly as standard pipes sound!

It's a Remus rear muffler, but being a 4cyl all it does is add a small amount of drone (no doubt amplified by being a wagon). Wouldn't be worth it in my opinion. I'm a stickler for a neat standard car, so if this ever dies I would replaace it with a standard looking exhaust.
