I have just had the 240TD engine overhauled and you are correct it is slow on take off and up steep hills however it happily cruises at 110kmh and dosent miss a beat the a/c is cold and I had keyless entry retrofitted it is comming along nicely as a restoration project.

I almost got one. Convinced my wife to take a weekend at Victor Harbor, where there just "happened" to be a 240TD for sale. :D Only to find it was sold by the time I got down there.

It is Signal red, code is 568. This is one of MB's longest running colours from 01.01.1963 up to 31.12.1993.

It just looked lighter than Stella, which bears the same paint code number. I thought it might be a different red is all.

Speaking of paint... I desperately need to do something about Stellas' paint. it really needs a serious cut n polish and a good waxing.

Looks like I'll have something to keep me occupied for the next few weeks.

Picked my new W123 230E yesterday so these are first pics I've taken of her. Light Ivory. Doing a run to Ballarat tomorrow to see how she goes on the Freeway and hills.

I'll take some better pics when I have time and am in a more photogenic location.

Finally got my new toy just over a week ago. Moved house the following day, so not had a lot of time to take pics yet, but here are some I managed to get today, when the sun actually decided to put in an appearance.

Doesn't need a lot doing as far as I can see, just a bot of a tidy here and there.

Hello There,

I am a new member, currently own a 1980 W123 300D in a yellow colour - the best car I have ever owned. didn't come with all the papers, but had been a NSW Country car doing long K's. I have owned heaps of cars in my time and 'Betsy' drives better than all of them. Would anyone know what the actual shade of yellow is? I want to start restoration and would like to know as I can't seem to find the colour anywhere.

Hi W123 Fan, Good looking car you've got there. Seems to be in good nick.

Have a look at http://www.astralsilber.de/. It's a german site but if you click "Lackierungen/Farbcodes" you'll find the extensive W123 colour scheme.

I believe Betsy is colour code 681 "Weizengelb", which translates as "Wheat Yellow".

HI EVERYONE I HAVE JUST PURCHASED MY FIRST EVER MERCEDES, SHE IS A 1984 230E, I WAS GOING THROUGH EBAY AND SPOTTED HER, SO I DECIDED TO BID NOT THINKING I WOULD EVER GET THE PRECIOUS CAR AND THE NEXT DAY I HAD A LOOK AND FOUND THAT I WAS A WINNER, YOU WOULDN'T GUESS HOW MUCH I PAID $810 FOR HER. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG, SHE GOES LIKE THE CLAPPERS, THERE IS A SMALL RUST SPOT THAT NEEDS ATTENTION, AND THE INSIDE NEEDS A BIT OF ATTENTION TOO BUT OTHERWISE SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL CAR, I WILL POST SOME PHOTOS OF MY PRIDE AND JOY AS SOON AS I CAN, YOU GUYS MIGHT BE ABLE TO TELL ME IF THIS IS THE ORGINAL COLOUR FOR THE CAR, AS I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE PAINT WORK.

Check out the website in one of my previous posts. It contains all official MB colors, so if you compare these with the color number listed on the car's identification tag, you should be able to find out more.....

This is my w123 300d i purchased to run on WVO so far it has done just over 25,000ks on WVO during that time the auto and vaccum pump have failed not bad for a car that is older than me!!
ongoing idleing problem though which is why i got it for $1500
wheels are of a GTR skyline 235/17"

Well, Here it is the "Pride of The Fleet"

This is actually my second Mercedes. Back in the early eightees I had the pleasure of owning a 1963 230S. I don't know the model designation but it was a mighty fine family car. Before the days of baby capsules you could fit a bassinet and a child booster seat in the back. Plenty of room in the boot for all the other paraphenalia a young family needed for a days outing. I even remember the rego, KAK 050. Engine was a bit tired but factory manual, wind up windows and red upholstery similar to the blue in the 230E above. Anyway times move on and I have done the full circle and am now the proud owner of the above 1983 W123. I'd been looking for a 'project ' car for some time and this one just fell into my lap. I've worked on a lot of cars in my time and wanted something good as a starting point. No point in starting with a Holden/Ford bacause at the end you've still got a throw away. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear as they say. Start with classic quality and at the end you've got better classic quality, all the work isn't for nothing. Here's a couple more pics-

As I said in my original post the past owner has owned it for the last 21 years and has kept it in excellent condition and serviced by the same mechanic not, technician, during this period. Unfortunately it has a cracked piston that needs repairing, but I reckon she'll come up OK. There's a couple of fiddly bits that need replacing as I'm pretty fussy, pedantic according to She Who Must Be Obeyed. Sometimes I think the fairer sex don't properly appreciate fine machinery as it deserves. The driver foot rest is cracked, the rear speaker fader control is also cracked and a plastic screw cover is missing from under the dash on the passenger side. Told you i was fussy. Not to mention the cracked piston. Also the rear RHS tail lamp plastic has been replaced at some stage and doesn't match the LHS which is faded. I guess this means I'll need to replace both otherwise it'll drive me mad whenever I look at it. The spare is the original Continental TS 771 in 175 SR 14 which still has those little pimply bits on it, hardly used. Not safe as a spare, DOT of 054 puts it as week 5 of 1984, a shame to throw away but I want a drivable vehicle with a good spare. Any good to someone restoring to exactly original /concourse condition ? By the way excellent tyre link John, I guess you're the man to see about the bits I require ?

I'm looking forward to this project and would appreciate whatever advice/help other forum members can give me

The Vegetarian Fräulein started life in the UK back in 1982 as a 280CE. By the late 90’s she had found her way to Sydney and then eventually to Melbourne (probably when the annual roadworthies in NSW started to cost too much), eventually being abandoned in a storage yard by the sea. By the time it was offered to me, the sea air had corroded the aluminum trims and paint, the velour interior was heat worn and torn, the sun roof frame rotted, causing material water damage to the front seats, floor and LH front pillar. The bonnet wouldn’t stay up (the spring was rusted off) and the M110 engine had wacky oil pressure readings. Suffice to say, there was the opportunity to negotiate down the price !

A few years earlier, the family outgrew our 250CE (W114 with an M110 fitted running on LPG), so I started looking for an alternative. At the same time, a friend of mine started making BioDiesel for his Toyota HiLux, so the whole WVO \ BioFuels thing became a real option. All roads were pointing to the OM617 engine and a W123 wagon. At the time, I was also driving a V8 UC Torana Hatchback, so you can imagine what was going through the sellers mind as he kept asking me if I knew how a Benz Diesel performed.

We bought the wagon and upgrade it to a seven seater (it was missing that option, so it was off to the wreckers to source all the bits) and have been using it as a family wagon ever since. They are a great car to drive and very easy to maintain. I sold the Torana in favour of the W114 but not long after, it went into terminal decline, so started looking for a replacement. I wanted another 617 Benz Diesel but preferably a two door – Not a standard option, as because as far as I am aware, they never made a RHD version. Then the Victor in me came out and I started scheming my creation.

Buy the 280CE that was on offer, go to an insurance salvage auction and get a well cared for but written off 300D (or even better 300TD) and another coupe. If it all came to tears, I could wreck every thing out and most likely get my money back. So …

At auction, I bought a 300D that was tee boned (LH Rear Door) and a 280CE that had been severely front and back ended.

The Fräulein’s M110 was actually OK (the oil had coagulated, hence the weird pressure readings) so I sold the engine and all the fuel injection \ petrol electrical stuff. Fitting the OM617 engine was a snap – Just bolted into place except for the engine stabliser\shock absorber mounts. I cut off the 300Ds and had them rewelded into place. The 300D rear cross member for the gear box was also used. There were no changes to tailshaft lengths or couplings etc. Used the wiring sections for the starter motor, air con and GlowPlug Relay indicator Lights. The 300D also donated it’s Fuel tank strainer, Ignition Switch (vacuum shut off), Radiator, Exhaust, Battery shelf, Lower LH Pillar, Passenger Floor area and Bonnet Hinges. From the coupe came the complete interior, sunroof assembly, cruise amplifier & regulator and aluminum window trims. The wagon got the coupes full set of zebrano wood trims for the dash and console as an extra treat (though I did have to resolder all the plugs for the latter style window switches and hazard blinker).

To complete the transformation, I bought 300CD & BioDiesel badges from the US. When registering my new creation, I thought I might get held up in having to produce an engineer’s certificate, but instead had some difficulty convincing the VicRoads inspector that 5 cylinder engines do indeed exist. A quick check of the 300TD credentials closed that. The Fräulein is not mint but is tidy and doesn’t look scrappy - if it collects a few dings along the way (perils of city driving), so be it. My partner immediately took it off me to commute her 70kms a day and two years later, it hasn’t missed a beat.

Would I do this again ? Definitely. Every thing aside from the welding and panel beating I did myself – These cars are designed to be maintained by DIY’ers. And, at the risk of being flamed, I am not a huge fan of the M110 engine (ever had to put a helicoil in Pot #6 cause the previous owner cross threaded the spark plug ?) and prefer my fuel automatically carbon offset and at 25c / litre. (The straight WVO advocates would argue why pay 25c, pour it straight in ! However, my partner has made it clear that she will not do the start \ stop on diesel thing and as we live in Melbourne, the oil does thicken up in Winter). Of great interest to me is that some of you have put the 617.950 US Turbo in RHD – I am very seriously considering getting another tired 280CE and making a 300CDT. It’s off to talk to my Muscle Car cronies about importing some complete engines, trans and ancillaries – They will get a great laugh out of that !

Having done the M110 -> OM617 swap myself, I agree that most of the job was really simple, if somewhat heavy to do on your own.
How did you handle the engine vacuum shut-down operation?
I used one of the vacuum solenoids provided by the M110, and as the 12V (Ignition) was available for the Ignition module, used that to operate the solenoid, blocking vacuum while the ignition is On. When the Ignition is Off, the vacuum passes to the shut-down diaphragm, cutting fuel to the IP.

Hi Tony - Thankyou for the compliment and your electric vacuum shutoff is a great way to get the Vacuum shutoff working ! In my case, I used the ignition housing from the 300D which has the vacuum switch attached and then used all the standard vacuum lines. If ever it fails, I will use your method.

Speaking of vacuum, as an aside ...

The Fräulein also had an english speedo (mph) so I replaced that with the one from the write off coupe, which had the manifold vacuum indicator - not really needed for a diesel but I connected it to the vacuum lines anyway so I can see if the vacuum pump is working, as well as the demands place on the vacuum system by Cruise Control, Heater & AirCon, Doors \ Seat locks, Transmission amongst others.

Here is old faithful. I bought this wagon about 5 years ago, as the body and interior were in superb condition. Mechanically it wasn't quite as perfect, so the engine was COMPLETELY renewed, with new pistons, all bearings, camshaft (these wear terribly on the M102 if lubrication and servicing isn't kept up to better than perfect standards!), rockers, and full head restoration. All machining expertly done by Greg Wood of Woody's Engine Services in Melbourne, who has also done stunning machine work to the head of my '64 230SL.

The gearbox and differential were a little suspect (flaring and pinion bearing noise), so these were entrusted to Peter Lennox, also in Melbourne. The car suffered from the all-too-common bouncing rear end (I see so many TEs bouncing down the road, with the owners probably blissfully unaware of how much better the car can actually be!), so new genuine nitrogen-filled accumulators were fitted, along with new Bilstein front struts.

Then new discs, pads, front end bushes, steering damper, power steering seals, and numerous other items were replaced. One expensive but worthwhile investment was the custom-made set of extractors I had made when I decided not to replace the original cast-iron exhaust manifold with another expensive, new item that was bound to develop the same annoying cracks.

Sure, it wasn't the cheap buy I thought I'd scored at the end of it, but the car has been (in almost 100,000 km since) been an incredibly reliable, enjoyable, reliable and capable wagon that has been worked hard, but cared for and serviced religiously. I doubt there was ever a more capable wagon made than the Mercedes W123. I do a lot of kilometres as a musician and vintage guitar dealer, often with ridiculous weights in the luggage compartment, and the headlights are always exactly in aim, and the car never loses its composure and poise despite the weight it may be carrying or towing.

And the M102 engine (with new camshaft giving correct valve opening) is a surprisingly powerful and fuel-efficient engine.

Plus, I have always considered these to be one of the nicest-looking station wagons ever built. Definitely the best of the Mercedes offerings. Their first was their best in my humble opinion!

Updated October 2010. I thought I'd fit the wheels from the AMG 280TE I bought some time back (very rusty body, but mint black interior and all those very rare AMG bits, including original Penta wheels and rear tailgate spoiler that I have fitted to my 230TE. The body mouldings and the leather AMG steering wheel can wait for another day!

I have always considered these to be one of the nicest-looking station wagons ever built. Definitely the best of the Mercedes offerings. Their first was their best in my humble opinion!

Sorry for the late reply.
Front grille was bought on ebay..
The 124 steering feels nice, a lil heavier.. but nice..
The difference in diameter does not increase the number of turns. This is because the difference is quite small.

All in all, thanks for the comments and its a pleasure sharing.
Rims cost me a arm and a leg.. and perhaps another arm and a leg!!!!!

Friends have already nicknamed the car as KGB (Kakky Green Benz :lol: ) because of it's delightfull green colour code 874, which in German is called Citrus Green. Only available from its introduction in 1976 till 1979 (Serie 1). So there won't be many of these around. I love it!

Interior is MB Tex in a bone or light cream colour (code 105, "Pergament" in German).

The odo read 364400 when I bought is, but cylinder head has been replaced less than 10k ago. Further new radiator, brakes, AC compressor and more. The car has been well maintained an has no rust, although some rust repairs have been done in the past around the rear window. Anyway, all up in good original condition I would say.

I drove it all the way up to Darwin and was amazed by its performance and handling. Everything works (AC, electric windows and sunroof) and the engine just purrs along. Sat on 120-130 most of the Stuart Hwy. No oil usage. All up I'm very impressed and happy the car did so well.

Some of the plastic panels inside need attention, carpet has worn patches, but overall it still looks nice.

Does the side of your chrome bumper come standard like this or did it have rubber bits on the side? I am wondering as it looks very cool if it had rubber bits I am thinking of removing mine to have this very cool effect but if it is standard like this then perhaps not a good idea, email me plz brettheart911@hotmail.com

Here is my beautiful 1984 230E

I acquired her from a car dealer, her body has always been in great condition but the engine was left to fight for itself, she died after a few months of acquiring her. I had fallen madly in-love with her by this time, so there was no second though about putting in a second hand new engine, and so I did she has just gone over 200,000kms runs like a dream! Turns heads where ever she goes, shes the best car I have ever had I bought her for around $3500 Australian dollars, I have added a few extra's to the vehicle like tinting, chrome wheels, sports exhaust and racing leads, neons, sub woofer and speakers, but I have still keep her class and luxurious appeal intact.

Standard features included (inside of the vehicle);
Air con
Cruise Control
Cream Leather
Wood paneling
Hazard lights
Electric slide back sunroof
Disc braking system
Abs
Front rear speaker adjustable sliding switch
Fire Extinguisher
Heater system
Front and rear Interior lights

I intend to keep her for the rest of my life.

I had fallen madly in-love with her by this time, so there was no second though about putting in a second hand new engine, and so I did she has just gone over 200,000kms runs like a dream! Turns heads where ever she goes, shes the best car I have ever had I bought her for around $3500 Australian dollars, I have added a few extra's to the vehicle like tinting, chrome wheels, sports exhaust and racing leads, neons, sub woofer and speakers, but I have still keep her class and luxurious appeal intact.

Does the side of your chrome bumper come standard like this or did it have rubber bits on the side? I am wondering as it looks very cool if it had rubber bits I am thinking of removing mine to have this very cool effect but if it is standard like this then perhaps not a good idea, email me plz brettheart911@hotmail.com

Buddy, that's a standard 280E/CE bumper bar. The 230E and 300D share the rubber cornered bars, while the 280 got wrap around bars.
