THRSTY merc

Post by Eski » Sat 12 May, 2018 11:28 pm

Hello ozbenz!!

My names Matt and I'm from Perth. About a year ago I bought a w114. At the time everything looked good and seemed to drive amazing. Since then I have been going over the car and well it's turned into a decent sized project.
I love the car to bits and hope to have it back on the road this year some time. At the moment I'm fixing rust in the rocker panels, boot and rear quarters also getting all the calipers rebuilt and freshening up all the suspension

Also by any chance does anyone know how much difference there is between w114 and w124 engine mount locations? As in width apart, Is there similar amount of room in the engine bays?

Ok so over the last month or so I have been getting all the parts I need to get up and going again. I have all the brake calipers back looking like new, all new discs all round. They will be going on this weekend.

Most of the patch panels are done with only the passenger side rocker left. I'm hoping that the paint I have bought to paint will be close-ish. I know it'll be a little off due to age.
I have to get the indicators to hold position again (easy fix)

My spring compressors have finally turned up so if anyone needs to borrow them hit me up.

Haha thanks, not many actually get it. I get most people thinking it refers to fuel assuming it has a V8 or something

Ok so all the rust is now gone!!!!! Took longer than I had hoped but it's done. I have painted all the wheels Wells and it's made a big difference in how tidy it looks. Next on the list is to bleed the brakes and install suspension

Make sure you check your rubber brake hoses for cracks before you bleed the brakes.

Replace when in doubt!

Really?

I would think there is a flexible where the brake line transfers from the body to each swing arm....

Only a few bolts ;)

Is the engine etc original to the car?

I will double check if the engine matches. I was thinking about engine conversions at one stage to something newer but I dunno anymore

I was thinking 1jz as I have one on a stand at home but I couldn't find a kit for it only for a w124 but I don't know how different the engine mount locations are.
I have since moved on from that idea and will keep this motor in

It doesn't look correct - as in the crossmember.

Sure, the mount is stuffed - that's not difficult to replace.

the issue is the crossmember. in the pics I posted from the EPC, which one is used depends on your transmission type and your engine / vehicle model.

what is your VIN?

The auto looks like a 722.200, but it's not easy to tell.

Here's some info.
Should be reasonably self-explanatory. typ suffixes are related to L for LHD, R for RHD, A for automatic, M for manual and then combined - e.g. RM- RHD Manual transmission / LA = LHD Automatic transmission.
the footnotes don't print, but they are production cutoffs - e.g. upto vin (last 6 digits) or for example 412 = NLA order individual parts.

I've seen people space down a crossmember to resolve a tailshaft angle issue. Usually in a lowered car.

Not necessary in a 114/5 though - they have IRS. on the earlier models with a swing axle, maybe, but not necessarily so.
Usually a crossmember swap/mod is from a gearbox swap, and if this was a different auto or a manual to auto, then I would expect that the conversion should have the correct transmission crossmember, they were not expensive (still aren't) and one would have picked up the necessary bits with the swapout from the wrecker or whoever.

iirc the 124 & 201's trans crossmembers were less than 50 bucks for brand new factory part. so no real excuse from that perspective. the actual trans mounts were more expensive than the crossmember!
