Got taken for a spin in a M117.968 high comp powered race car at the weekend, it had a lot of dyno time and fine tuning, larger throttle body, EFI , etc, there is a sleeping giant just waiting to be unleashed , so much potential in these motors. Looking forward to your results.

Those results will be very interesting being able to see the improvements from each modification.

I noticed lots of discussion in your similar topic on the TK forum regarding the correct pairing of cylinders for the pipes.

Hi Greg thanks for the advise went looking for information yes you were right . Didn't find it on the net to begin with . I have an old engine tech book from Phil Irving that belonged to my late grandfather had a read and found what you were talking about. Your comments created a light bulb moment that I remembered reading about. It was in this book he was talking about extractors on Repco Brabham race car. As you would have seen on other forum they didn't want to believe that was the correct design. I spoke with Tony the owner of Genie about it and he said it was correct design he would see if it was possible. It is but not without removing un used cast in brackets from rear of drivers side engine mount. As for seeing job will let you know were I end up when I move east it will be later this year.

Re Phil Irvings thoughts on exhaust design. He Didn't guess most of what he knew but used dynos, both at Norton and here in Australia. His H & F G series dyno is in the Bathurst Museum.

i was talking with a bloke a couple of years ago who makes headers for Chev powered commodores. His look very simple but work far better than the drag race style 4-1 units everyone else was making and fitting. Again, the dyno results were there to see.

You will never lose torque by going smaller (2.5 is the standard size of the 6.9 pipe) . You really should have gone to 3 or 4" diameter. If running a little exhaust pipe "helps" torque then most performance cars would have more power by shoving a potato up the exhaust pipe .
On Chefklasses W111 500 Conversion we ran 4" exhausts . Beware of running too big a X in the crossover. It should only be as big as a 50 cent piece. Bigger holes lose power.

After the phone call I received today I have a sinking feeling that one off my air cells has collapsed . Even though I have suspension in locked position while it is going up and down on the hoist. Apparently when they brought my car down for the day it started leaking sls fluid from the top of the reservoir. Will head over tomorrow apparently not much but seeing as it should not happen at all . John what's your opinion. All 5 cells were done in 2011 have receipts with car. :dontknow:

Hi Kim yes I am looking forward to seeing the results . The proof is in the pudding or power as the case may be. Around 50hp increase from extractors and throttle body would be nice if not will look at other areas . I believe AMG offered a 6.9 upgrade to 375hp from what I have found Ron may be able to confirm this. If so I need extra 85hp to match this. I have found supplier of adjustable cam sprockets in Germany and a Cam maker in the UK who makes new cams from billet blanks. I will go down this path in the future but after current work car is being painted. As for 4 inch exhaust there was one sitting under my car yesterday when I went to Genie. It belonged to the FEAR Monaro show and burnout car that makes over 1000hp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbfAj7n3s1c

They look fantastic! I am however a little surprised to see how short both the primary and secondary pipes lengths are. The tri-Ys on my 500SLC with cast iron manifolds obviously also have short primary lengths (see photo in my post at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=19159&start=25#p138802 ) but its secondaries are long and don't merge until under the front seats (see photo in my post at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=19159&start=25#p138837 ).

Hi Greg more than anything clearance is the problem under the 6.9 . To get the pipes in that configuration on the drivers side required removal of some metal on the engine mount. And the secondaries are very tight around steering box . I am hoping the ceramic coating does enough to keep the heat away from the steering box and starter motor. http://www.cicceramic.com.au/

Similar problem with the 500SLC. The 107 engine bay is very narrow to the extent that the rear two spark plug connectors on the right bank are angled to clear the battery. Combine the narrow engine bay with the M117 fitted with tri-Y pipes and it's amazing they fit them in at all let alone with four secondaries (engine pipes) leading all the way out underneath. I can understand why RHD versions of the 500SL weren't fitted with the same setup (the LHD 500SL had the same setup as the 500SLC). Here are some photos I snapped of the tri-Y manifolds and engine pipes on my 500SLC.

The good thing is they are able to be unbolted . So if we can figure out a way for longer secondaries they will not have to be completely re made. But will see how it goes for now . Genie called at lunch time saying exhaust is finished and they will do dyno run Monday morning.

Looking at the photos of yours, I'm sure they will flow much better than the original log manifolds. Even if the primaries and secondaries are shorter than ideal, their better gas flow combined with a larger system throughout should see a worthwhile power increase, especially in the upper rev range. I'm looking forward to seeing the dyno results and will then be interested to see what the larger throttle body achieves on top of that.

Yes I am interested to see what happens . I know they claim ceramic coating reduces under bonnet temp by about 10 degrees and by keeping internal temp higher increases horsepower by increasing gas velocity. So I guess we will see how it goes and sounds Monday I have no doubt they will be a lot higher than standard manifolds in power and torque. Then to fitting 92mm throttle body and seeing what difference that makes.

That's better than 10% gained. Not bad for a new set of pipes. I will be interested to see the graph for the before and after compared to see just where in the rev range the gains were made. Was your previous run also done without the air filter fitted? The final results after fitting the bigger throttle body will be interesting.

No original run was with the air cleaner on the car. Unfortunately dyno broke with another car this morning. So my car was dynoed across the road at emissions testing workshop on old rolling road dyno. As it is not the same dyno decided to do run without air cleaner to remove doubt about result with next test. They have decided to do throttle test on the same dyno as today so it will show power difference throttle body makes. So I will be able say that change makes X amount of power. Then car is to go onto original dyno after repairs and will dyno with air cleaner back on car. And I will be able to show difference between standard Euro 6.9 and car with extractors/exhaust/throttle body mods . Showing total power gain in apple with apple comparison. Used opportunity to show ultimate gain with throttle body and no restrictions. Car that unfortunately caused problem was 1500hp show car. Dyno has brake issue so needs fixing. Hope this helps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBJmKbe ... e=youtu.be Ok the good news car is running today. The bad news is throttle needs to be adjusted as something is binding as throttle needs hard push of idle. Then revs hard before freeing up to normal movement. It does mean car is un-driveable until this is sorted.

Throttle body made 21.7hp at rear wheels on old rolling road dyno. Car will be going onto original dyno Monday and will post overall increase with these mods . Seeing as different dyno used the only valid result is the 21.7hp from throttle body

So, did you go for a drive? If so, how was it?

Still need to sort throttle its smooth with engine turned off . As soon as vacuum added with engine running it needs idle turned up to be able to drive and it is very snappy. Thinking maybe of drilling hole in throttle plate to relieve back pressure question is how large should the hole be. All throttle linkages have been checked.

After inspecting car today found new throttle has slight movement in the throttle shaft side ways. So I am thinking when vacuum is added throttle plate is moving side ways and jamming. So I need to find a way to stop this. Not very happy as its a new throttle body. :angry4: If that is not possible grinding small amount from throttle plate on both sides near shaft should fix catching . Just need to make sure not to much that I cannot compensate for with adjustment screw.

Have you got it fixed and taken it back in yet? Looking forward to final dyno comparison results.

Still working on throttle have improved it but still not perfect once moving its ok. But take offs are like a dragster dyno is tomorrow morning at 08:00 will post results . Throttle is just adjusting and looking for the problem it appears to be shaft related.

Ok First good news dyno run as can be seen was done. Bad news throttle issues meant they could not get a proper run in. As throttle is to abrupt in take up so I have been told they will redo when I fix the throttle issues. But you can relax I did get a result not as good as my 278.5hp on rolling road . And not the final reading as issues with throttle meant it was to easy to hit limiter and could not do full load run. But 255.6hp at rear wheels Torque 348.81 foot pounds . Flywheel corrected 320.8hp . So 31.9hp Flywheel and 25.5hp at the wheels but will update as soon as I can when I sort throttle problem.

I'm guessing once you get the throttle sorted, the driving experience will exceed the printed piece of paper.
Your photo doesn't show the scale, but it looks like (and sounds like in the video), power is instant off idle and delivery is relentless.
That's how that EFI 5.6 117 HV motor of Kim's is and I think your going to be happy with your set up once sorted. :)
