My 250SE looked a bit like that once... but I'd made the mistake of loading it up with 450kg of wall tiles... so it had an excuse.

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Hey Guys,
I picked my 280 SEL 3.5 (betty) up from a mad guy who had spent many years and hours cutting out all the rust and generally tidying up the body work.
he had reciepts for nearly 100 Hours of removal and had used a donor car for new doors etc etc,
as a result i am the proud owner of a very straight and very well painted 108
it had been garaged for the better part of 15 years.
The only down side to it is that he had replaced the seats with the donor car of which the color was different.
my current plan is to remove all the interior and start from scratch, new trim, door cards and hood lining.
im re wiring her as i go with the intention of having a completely modern car with the wiring and new toys hidden behind the original stuff.
have been trying to decypher the coding on the card from the factory in regards to what the orig color of the trim should be. so i can keep it original.
oh and im blessed with a sunroof too which appears to be fairly rare. however i have not been able to figure out where i can find actual numbers
cheers
Brendan
might need to zoom out as i couldnt be bothered resizing :)

Nice one Brendan.
You will need to get the data card from the Classic Centre to find the trim code for your car. Find a post by pastelgrey300 that tells you how to get it.
Cheers, Drew

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Here are a few shots of my new 300SEL 3.5 in Dark Red with the Parchment leather and Zebrano interior. I am the second owner and she's been incredibly well looked after - the interior is immaculate, she has very low mileage and everything about the drive is tight, smooth and as it should be.
We've christened her "Ingrid" - seemed fitting for an attractive German red-head from the 70s! She's a beauty and we love her :love4:
And yes, that's a baby seat in the back!

Looks wonderful. Certainly a very dark red. You can't go past a dark W108/09.

For those of you with air ride on a W108, did you remove or modify the rear compensator spring?

Ahh, now I can see what you mean, by your pic - I have only seen one air bagged car and it most definitely had the compensating spring removed.RHD108 wrote:For those of you with air ride on a W108, did you remove or modify the rear compensator spring?
Nice looking car, apart from the airbagging

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Thank you. I ended up slightly shortening the rear spring compensator to get the rear as low as it can go but it also has enough tension in there when the car is raised up so it isn't loose in there. I asked that question before installing the air ride btw.ANF wrote:Ahh, now I can see what you mean, by your pic - I have only seen one air bagged car and it most definitely had the compensating spring removed.RHD108 wrote:For those of you with air ride on a W108, did you remove or modify the rear compensator spring?

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Here is my W108. This has been in a shed since 1998 and has its log books. It took alot of cleaning to get it like this and more cleaning to go. A 1971 W108 280SE 3.5. I have added a file with the pics as the old girl stands now. I have had it up on stands for the last two weeks removing 40yrs of grime from the engine bay and underneath before moving her into the shed. The chrome etc will be labled and removed and stored on the mezzazine floor, pull all the bars off etc and repair the little rust spots and prep for paint. The drivers seat has a small tear that needs attention. The PO is going to find the clock which he pulled it out and sat it on the shelf. Hope you enjoy. I am off to Canberra in the coming weeks to pick up 5 bundt rims from John MBSpares thanks mate for your assistance. Cheers Tim.

Well, I haven't got the big white steering wheel yet. But I take delivery this week of a big charcoal coloured steering wheel, attached to a very tidy white 1971 300SEL 3.5.
To say that I am very pleased, and very proud, to own such a superb piece of engineering is an understatement.
I'll post some photos after I have collected the machine!

Delighted to oblige:
These shots are as is. I've just picked up the two Leatherique solutions to have a go at cleaning the seats, then perhaps re-dyeing them if necessary. Shots of the engine to come.

For over two tons of car, it drives pretty well. I've hoofed it through some hills near here, and though I'm no Grand Prix driver, I was impressed with the way it cornered. The air suspension is something else. Not only does it help iron out bumps and dips at low speeds, but I suspect it helps keep the car flat in corners at higher speeds. Yes, I noticed the no parking zone. Some people have no respect for authority.

Bill, you have your priorities right - the first photo is of the engine bay showing that thirsty, beautiful D-Jet V8.
I'm glad to see there will be another W108/09 close to Canberra.
It looks great both inside and out - not often you see 2-tone Mercedes. What is that device under the air-conditoner? -an 8 track?

Hi David,
To be quite honest I hadn't even noticed it but yes it does look like an 8 track to me.
I'll check it out once I collect it and fill you in.
My understanding is that the two tone is ex-factory as there are 2 paint codes on the compliance plate.

To be quite honest I hadn't even noticed it but yes it does look like an 8 track to me.
I'll check it out once I collect it and fill you in.
My understanding is that the two tone is ex-factory as there are 2 paint codes on the compliance plate.
Kind Regards
Bill

Nice looking car mate, and clean too!
And yes, that is a 8-Track mounted under the dash. Good Score!! even better if it works. :occasion5:

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Thanks,
I picked it up yesterday and is now down for Blue Slip inspection, hopefully it will pass ok and will have it registered next week.
As always the car looks better in the pictures than it actually is but overall it should clean up ok.
Carpets need replacing, I noticed there is a small hole in drivers side floor but overall rust appears to be minimal.
Will know more on Monday once its on the hoist.
Yes, it was an 8 track under the air con, not sure if it works, will get into those sorts of things over time, once I get it home.
I've uploaded a couple of more pictures.
https://www.dropbox.com/home/Mercedes%20280SE
Will be a long term project to go through the car and get it to a tidy condition, with everything working.
Kind Regards

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Hi Bill car looks great.
Was this the one that was at pickles a few months ago then I think turned up not long after at Grays online. I think Ron had some history on this car.
It was discussed on the 108/109 thread.

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Hi Steven,
Thanks for the background, yes it appears to be the same car.
Since the previous Graysonline auction the buyer spent around $3,500 in getting the car running and driveable and with a Blue Slip (which unfortunately has since lapsed).
It was then on consignment for some time as a running vehicle with a dealer in the inner city and advertised on Gumtree for $12,999.
The car was then removed from consignment a few days before I inquired about it and the dealer was pretty upset that the owner had then listed it with a $6,000 reserve, as he advised me that the owner had knocked back a few offers of $9,000 - 9,500 and $11,500 was his minimum.
Anyhow, I won it at $6,200 which I thought was ok for a 3.5 considering the ones I've seen recently in reasonable condition have all sold for greater than $10k.
The car looks reasonable solid, the engine and transmission appear to be working ok, there doesn't appear to be any structural rust, its complete other than the Mercedes Star, which MB Spares supplied a replacement for.
Who knows I may have bought a lemon, only time will tell.
I'd be interested in understanding the history of the car if anyone knows it.
The VIN is 10805722011739.
Kind Regards
Bill

Here's the first time I saw the car I'd travelled 3,000 kms for and I'm currently restoring.

Thanks Thomas. It definitely does look a lot better without all the TasBash stickers, first time in two years I have really seen it

Air suspension kaput or a special lowering?
Looks a little indecent... Highest approval for the rest except that strange cowcatcher.

I put air suspension on it. Not sure why it looks indecent to you if you had a w109(according to your signature) that comes factory with air suspension. I'm guessing you didn't like yours either when it would lower?
And I like the grill guard as well since I managed to source one and put it on. Like they say, you can't please everyone!

Re: Star Shots! - Show us your Ride
Hi all,
This is my as yet unnamed 1966 250S with manual transmission. History is a little murky but it came over from TAS about 5 years ago where it had SI plates on it. A number of recent items attended to include brakes rebuilt with new lines, new bearings & rings fitted when the head gasket was attended to, with new valve stem seals. New aircon compressor but head unit not yet fitted. Kingpins replaced. Radiator renewed and minor rust attended to in the area. All new hoses and belts and otherwise unmolested. There is a curious mounting under the front bumper, perhaps where a towball could be fitted. Body is extremely straight and rust free. Windscreen and seal under 10 years old (has a 2007 date on the glass). Interior is excellent but MB-Tex could use a good treatment/clean and the carpets are a bit faded. Coachwork is all in good condition and would benefit from a rub back - what's the best treatment? Beeswax? Shellac? Some of the rubber kick panels on the door sills are brittle and should be renewed. A joy to drive.

Nice car! A shame to lose that from our Tassy benz community but you're welcome to bring it back for a visit!
I'm on to my second wood refurbishment and I would suggest the car deserves the proper treatment after all these years.
There are quite a few pieces but if you proceed methodically it's not too daunting. I strip mine with spray stripper and a plastic scraper used very carefully as the veneer is extremely thin. Then use 0000 steel wool and meths to remove all residue . You may get away with just steel wool but the original varnish is pretty tenacious. Do not use sandpaper , lest ye strip the veneer.
Then I restain it. If all pieces match , you may instead choose to leave the wood unstained. I used the inside of the glovebox lid as a guide to the original stain.
For refinishing , shellac may look good but it is not water or UV proof and when damaged looks awful.
My choice of finish is 3 coats of slightly thinned satin marine varnish (UV protection as well) applied with a quality brush.
For now , if you just want to keep the wood in "as is" condition you could rub some beeswakx in with 0000 steel wool.
Enjoy your car , as I do mine - and as of course we all do!
