Period Exhaust Upgrade

Post by Bobsmyuncle » Sun 07 Oct, 2018 2:27 pm

Hi all, I'm wondering if there were any brands or modifications that owners would have done in the 60s and 70s. I am replacing a rear muffler and some tubing towards the front of the car and ideally would like to mimic period upgrades. Keep in mind I'm not expecting any performance return just the 'look'.

Perhaps parts from other models? As an example the exhaust found on the AMG W110 is likely from another model correct? viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15717&p=172230&hili ... st#p172230

Thanks in advance, Jason

I would run a nice long straight through resonator only on the rear, like what you can see on that AMG car. The reason i say that is because on my M110 W116, that's what i had and it wasn't loud at all, but did give it a performance and fuel economy boost, but the set up on there I think may have been blocked given how dramatic the improvement was.

I don't know your engine but do you have two pipes coming off the manifold? On a W108 250, it has two but then soon y junction into one to the rear. The 280 had 2 pipes straight to the rear and 2 in 2 out at rear. Sounds better I reckon and also must run more freely.

But good to put in your signature block too...... and your location is really handy for recommendations - eg. there is a great place in xxxx that can do that exhaust for you

Yeah, go stainless.

The exhaust will rot from the inside out otherwise (the condensation that stays in there if you do not drive it often)

If you order mandrel bent tube and resonator mufflers you can make it all yourself.
If you are not too sure about the welding: tack it together and have it done by a professional welder.

You either spend a zillion dollars or make it yourself and spend lots of time on it.
