Starter Motor

Hi all,
Normally my interests are located in the 108 forum, but today I am seeking help/advice "for a friend". He has a manual 1965 W112 300SE, which is basically his daily driver (wife's run-about not included). His starter motor has reached a point now where it won't function without an encouraging prod/tap. Thinking out loud, this could be one of three things. 1) Brushes, 2) Main contacts in solenoid, or 3) solenoid binding. I have measured 1.4 Ohms across the solenoid, which seems to me a bit low, but is probably OK. From my experiences in the past with BMW and Moto Guzzi motorcycles, starters to a large extent are rebuildable. Is this the forum's opinion too? Are spare parts available? Any advice or idiosyncrasies?

They are rebuild able, they need to be pulled from the bottom of the car though and sometimes it's easier to remove the pitman arm off the steering box (hydralic puller needed) .Generally a pair of new bronze bushes, a set of brushes and a commutator clean up fixes them . There are places about which can supply brushes and Bosch has a company called Bosh automotive tradition which can supply pretty much anything. it's not usual for the solenoid to fail ,
