W111 Wipers Jamming

Post by psherlock » Mon 15 Jan, 2018 9:11 am

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 1968 250se. I noticed the LH wiper arm was sitting up above the RH arm at an unusual angle. When I took the LH arm off the spline and adjusted it so it sat evenly as it does on my 220sb, they now touch during use and can jam together. The RH arm hits the end of the LH arm on the return sweep - not always but when it does it really puts some pressure on the them and I don't want to damage anything. Is there an adjustment that I can do? Once they are returned they sit perfectly. It seems as though if LH wiper blade was slightly shorter or mover to the Left a little more they would clear each other. Has anyone else dealt with this? Cheers Pete

I suspect you have excess play in the system.

There is nothing much that can be done except for replacing components to eliminate the play (from a wreck)

Problem is, that you will have to rip out the whole dashboard to do so...

Thanks Bart - that was the response I was kind of expecting but not really wanting to hear...

I might just put it back the way it was. Even though visually it does my head in at least they don't rip themselves apart. Problem is this is only a 2 owner car and the whole dash, heater valves, A/C etc has all been restored in the last few years so I am loathe to pull it apart! Shame they didn't look at the wipers when they did it.

Cheers
