Drain from firewall – to the very left-hand side

Post by einar » Sun 10 Sep, 2017 7:34 pm

Is there supposed to be some sort of drainage of water along the A-post? See attached pic. Reason for asking is that I’ve observed a tiny rust-spot at the inner firewall on the left side – roughly where the grey dot (A) is placed in the attached right picture (at the inner part) leaving some water into the left footwell.
I know there is drain from the air-intake and the holes for the windscreen wiper spindles that goes into the tubes on both sides in the centre part of the engine bay – these are both working, no problem there. I’ve also changed the push-buttons along the lower windshield trim/moulding. Some water is entering the very left below the windscreen in the cavity between the inner and outer firewall, and seems to be stucked around the area of the grey dot. I’ve not been able – so far – to identify from where the water really enters into this region/cavity. Is the water supposed to drain along the A-post or is the water supposed to not enter this left region/cavity? If it is supposed to drain along the A-post I hence need to check the drainage channels – if any. Hope I’ve been able to explain the issue clear. Any advices and suggestions highly appreciated.

Hi Einar,

maybe have a look here (it's in German), although it's a cabriolet, it might help you:

Thanks for the link. German is ok with google-translate :-) However, he was not able to identify any drain at the A-pillar. I found a hole just behind (or to the right) of the front left jack hole – maybe that’s the drain (?). I’ll check.

Took some photos with the fender off. Doesn't looks like there's a dedicated drain. Would think it runs off through the engine bay underneath your brake booster on the lhd.

That section is double paneled, the outer part and a piece underneath . There should not be any water getting in there. Get under the dash and look for holes up as far at the bottom of the windshield. If the rubber wasn't sealed correctly rust will form in the wndow aperture flange. The only drains are the two plenum box drains with the rubber bulbs. The A pillars rust when water gets inside of them from the top through leaky windshield rubbers etc ) .Australian built finnys are chronic for rust up there under the double panel because the metal wasn't painted when new . To repair it properly requires the screen to come out and that cowl panel unpicked (spot welds drilled out) the panel removed and the rusted parts underneath repaired ,then the whole lot put back again . it takes a couple of weeks to do it. The bottom of the A pillar will rust where the jack point is welded in, if you have the mudguard off, lift the car carefully using the jack point , if it moves and bends, you will need to remove the front part of the sill ( rocker) and replace the bottom of the A pillar and jack point .
