16v head on 8valve block..... long cam chain

I have discovered that the 8valve and 16valve blocks are the same.....(?) why could I not just lengthen the cam chain, and fit a 16valve head to my 2.0l model. It will require a new exhaust manifold (and inlet too....) :roll:
What else is needed? Has anyone done this yet? Looks fairly straight forward.......CraigB take note.

Anyone from the 'higher echelons' of technical expertise?

No point really, to get all the top end parts at a price that is anywhere near reasonable, you might as well just buy a used complete engine. There are some big differances witht he chain guides, etc, etc.

Somewhere in my reading on the other forums last night, someone said basically every last item except the block is different!

Yes I am looking from a performance angle, but not at any cost. If I am going to thrash something I would like the bits to be readily replaceable and at a good price. At the moment, based on what appears to be that a W123 had a 2.3 M102 in it, I am thinking a 2.3 8valve might be the way to go. It would appear if you are going to go down the 6 road, you should start with a 2.6, and while I have seen relatively cheap ones, the 4's are more plentiful and also in manual. Was a 2.3 8 valve available in Australia and had the same brakes etc.? If so then it is simply and engine number change with the authorities with no inspection.

If you are reading this John, did you ever consider this option when you were competing in the W114? Pros cons?
