My 190e 2.3 16v Cosworth....10 year project haha

Post by SPM 16v benz » Sun 24 Sep, 2006 10:49 pm

Hey all,

My 2.3 16v cosworth. We bought this car about 1 yr ago with the standard 2.3 16v engine in it for $4500. We were so amazed with the price we didn't care what was wrong with it, so we bought it because we looked over the car and it looked great. Once we got it back to my fathers workshop we relised that it didn't start or even run so we pulled out the engine and what do you know there is a big hole in the side of the block. So anyway the past 1yr we have been getting bits and pieces for it to put it back together including a 2.5 16v engine from the UK for $2000 shipped to our workshop. So hopefully in the next month or so it should be running and driving. Anyways here are some pics and specs:

How you doin? Thats a nice cosworth u got there i think u got a bargin for it even through the engine had a hole. i like it very nice work putting in a 2.5!

I had one myself i reckon it was one off the best cars i've own but at the same time most temprmatle. i spent around 60-$70,000 in the time off owning the car just bringing it up to stratch!

When it was setup right gee some people were inpressed it was a real wrx beater at the same time ss utes not a problem vt ss etc munched most cars off da lights. you should see there faces after racing people when they look under your bonet to see only a little four cylinder.

At the same time i've had so many people work on mine and no one knew how to fix problems that occured but they would charge you for learning how to fix it. in the end i ended up doing everything myself from rebulding it turning etc. i've seen around on the internet people bagging out these cars saying they are no good. LOL if they only knew how many people that own these cars own a piece of automotive racing history! Ayrton Senna won a race in this car i was shocked when i found this out it was only after doing research about mine on what i can do to it i found all this history! well the famous f1 driver!!!!

Well if you ever need help or information with yours mate i'll would be happy to help out, Or also almost forgot i've got for sale if anyone is interested the Riegar Evo2 front bar and cosworth evo2 wing

cheers mate
Hope yours turns of to be a weapon!

Hey thanks for the comments, can't wait to get it on the road.

UPDATE: The 2.5 16v engine has been pulled apart and we are now waiting on some fordged pistons from the US, 0.5mm oversize too :D We also rebuilt the whole front end; new bushes, new shocks, new conrtol arms, etc and got some wheels for it. Will post pics of fordgies when I have them.

OKay, so now this has got me interested.

it looks like I can't very well just buy a standard 190 as a daily driver anymore.

The question is.... what SHOULD I buy?

Joe,

I remember back to when the W201 was released thinking that they seemed a bit cheap and plasticky compared to my 350SLC (107) which I owned at the time. I still own the 350SLC but along the way have also owned a 300TD (123), a manual 180E (201), a 300TE (124 - still own), a manual 190E-2.3 Sportline (201 - still own) and a 500SLC (107 - still own). They have all been great cars, each for their own particular reasons. The outstanding examples for road holding have been the 201s, especially the 2.3 Sportline. The 201 makes for a very practical daily driver, especially with just you or you and a passenger (although kids fit easily in the back). Around town they are nimble and economical and yet on the open road they have the qualities of the bigger Benzes. Long gone are my impressions of the 201 being cheap and plasticky. In fact I now believe them to be a remarkably well engineered and solid car.

As to which one to get, the 16 valve (Cosworth) models are the collectable and sought after models but these are probably more for weekends and club use being fussier and more costly to maintain. Of the "regular" models, try for an update ('89 or later model) with the lower body cladding. These gained many improvements over the earlier models and their lower ride height and two-tone schemes give them a better look. Better still, try for a Sportline which have lower and stiffer suspension still combined with faster steering ratio, smaller steering wheel, wider wheels and tyres and better seating (sometimes in leather).

Of all the engines, the 2.6 (M103 six) is probably the pick for smoothness and performance but is a tight fit in the engine bay and all that weight up front possibly detracts a little from the handling. The M102 fours are still smooth (but not in the same league as the M103) and the (unfortunately rare) 2.3 offers good low-down torque more than capable of shifting the relatively light (little more than 1200kg) 201 body.

I am very happy with my 2.3 Sportline and would not swap it even for a 2.6 (unless the 2.6 was a manual Sportline, something I have not seen in Oz). An interesting "project" would be to get a 2.6 Sportline and drop in a 3 litre M103 (very simple drop-in conversion). Whilst Sportlines are rare, there have been several pop up in the classifieds and on eBay recently, although many have come in from Japan.

You should come along to a club meeting or event so we can talk about 201s (or 107s for that matter since we share an interest there). You may also be interested in the series of articles I wrote for the NSW MB Club magazine a few years back which have been posted in the "Articles" section of the club forum at http://www.mbcnsw.org.au/forum/index.ph ... ,18.0.html

SPM 16v Benz 2.5 16v engine rebuild

Post by SPM 16v benz » Sat 28 Apr, 2007 11:06 pm

Hey all,

This is going to be my thread in which I will update as my engine gets put back together. To start off I just received my custom fordged pistons from CP today and they will be going to the shop so the block and crank can all be machined and cleaned up nicely so it all fits together.

4 x fordged pistons 0.5mm oversize
8 x custom rings
4 x pins

They are 200g lighter than the standard piston.

Has it really been 8 Years :laughing6: well its sitting in storage at the moment waiting haha after life took over and other responsibilities came first the years just got away from us. More and more projects seemed to keep coming my way, although I am trying to get around and finish some of them as working full time isn't as important these days. So hopefully in 2 years it should be finished although it will be taken back to a original 2.3 16v as I have recently acquired a 2.5 16v shell to put my 2.5 16v motor in, all I need is the interior and a manual box to complete that.

To do list as it stands at the moment;
Fix and sell c180 coupe w203
Fix and sell ML350 w163
Finish building C230 custom turbo 5 speed manual, C36 everything but motor, etc - was half way through it last year when I had to stop
***Get onto the 2.3 16v and finish it after probably 10 years*** haha
Start on the 2.5 16v and get it all done back to original

I haven't forgotten about anything and want to get onto them but time just gets away from me, ps if anyone has a 16v interior lying around or getrag box I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands.
