190E 2.3 16 Turbo Kit Information Please

Post by aquaihoi » Tue 13 Apr, 2010 12:15 am

Hi All,

Just want to know what's available. Is this " Mosselman Turbo Kit " like a fabled unicorn or something ?

What's the next best thing if you cannot find one of these ? Anybody boosted their 190e 2.3 ? What were the results, what was the performance and then wear and tear on the car / motor ? Who does this type of work ?

I am curious. Indulge me. Please, it's my first post.

Someone like Joe on here might know but I reckon you might find your answers at 190 revolution or the UK 190 forum. If you google you should find these forums. This is a good overall forum for australian info and has some very specific knowledge on some models and on some mods too, but I reckon those forums are at least worth a look in the meantime.

The Chief Information Officer on 190e 2.3-16 would be Brian (OzCoz) - who would probably agree, that you will disintegrate a cosworth engine by turbo-ing it.

go buy a 190e 2.6 and turbo that. don't wreck a cosworth.

Thanks Joe,

Point noted ! I thought about that. I am a big patriot of naturally aspirated motors, I believe that you can tune a motor rather then blow one up :-) Yes the example I am watching is in very good condition, the self levelling suspension has been removed and it already looks like it might have been used on the track - which is good thing. I have inspected it personally and the interior is almost brand new with very little wear and tear. Pretty good nick. I didn't take it for a drive as I'm pretty spot on when it comes to choosing cars from appearance and talking with the owner. It might be a go me thinks.

Any one in Melbourne that specialise in tuning these machines ? My dads friends are all Merc tech's but I'll get a kick up the but if I approach him to tune this car considering the amount of fines he takes a hit for me :-) Covert operation :-)

I'll check out the other forums in the mean time - just incase I really want to tyre shred on a track in the future.

Thanks for the goss fellas. Much appreciated.

Mosselman are still around as a company but I do not think they do it any more

Turbo tech has moved so far that they thing would be pretty much redundant anyway, though there is a cachet associated with a period mod. With modern turbo's and 3D tuning coming so far in the last few years you can get much better results across the board.
They are rare, after all not that may people mod new cars, and in Australia I would say it is in the Unicorn class as these cars were never sold here new.
Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.

" Hi mate,
Did you say there was a track 2.6-16v for sale here in Melbourne?
Cheers Daniel " dan_189 -

Sorry Dan, I can't seem to reply to your message due to me being a noob on here , so I'll post it up here - no there isn't a 2.6 in race spec for sale, the one I'm considering is 2.3 Cosworth, the guy has a 2.6 Evo and a couple o Fazzas, they have been imported from HK and at over 46k, me personally would not be pulling that machine apart to take on the track - they are too beautiful and rare for that ! - there's one going on carsales from a guy called William on carsales for around about the same price - this you could strip down for race use - if it is an evo.

The cosy I am thinking to use as a daily driver and later on in life when I have the financial means and my cams license to make it a track car, get dad and his guys to bore and tune the engine if need be and slap on some turbo's or a blower. I am hesitant to do this at the cost of buying an almost vintage merc - parts = $$$$$$ - my brother just bought an 300 CE and yep he's paying for some parts now :-), my daily driver is a 85 honda civic and I love it ! reliable as all hell and the only money I spend on it seems to be a couple of fuses here and then, $38 on juice for a week so it provides me with a lot of freedom. I bought it for $500 for a intermediate run around car when my work van got stolen but It's been so good and versatile I've kinda lost my blood lust for exotic cars for a while. But it does hammer - really if I drive other cars like I do this $500 run around, I'd be needing a new gearbox every second week and a new motor every second month. I got one of the honda guys to slap in a crash box - so I know I can abuse it like a track car on the road.

So hmm . . . I saw some good examples of Evo's for sale on some UK sites - I think classiccars.com and a couple of others - now that the Aussie dollar is so good, it might be worth taking a punt and grabbing one if you want a track car - I could possibly search around Japan for one as well - let us know.

Cheers

Hi A,
So your considering a 2.3 cosworth thats for sale here in Melbourne and the seller also has a 2.6 EVO? Do you mean he has a 2.6 with a cosworth body kit fitted?
Cheers

Hey Dan, that's probably what the issue is - " how do you exactly know - right ? " well from experience I'd take one of my dads old school merc mates down to inspect the car personally and test drive it and all that guff - or have the owner bring it to their tune shop so they can go through it with the finest of combs. That is how meticulous I am with these sorts of things. Then you can be absolutely sure that you are buying a genuine model. Did they make 2.5/2.6 with auto boxes ? Dunno - haven't researched this bit - but the one of car sales is auto :-( so unless I wanted to spend a lot of money to drop in another gear box - I'd pas on that one. Don't really want a half evo - I actually prefer the cosy - when and if I have the spare cash from a proper evo - then i'd get one - I have been reading up on kugelfischer . . . sounds good to me . . . bloddy no info on this thing any where . . . cosy at DTM spec - minus sequential gears for a daily driver ? I like the sound of that.

Bad300 seems to be doing some turbo-ing or supercharging on his M103 you maybe able to P.M. him and ask him where is specialist is.

Other than that, Geoff at Prestige Motors in Burwood road Hawthorn has some experience at twin turbo-ing a M103 and M104. His number is 0398184555

Hi aquaihoi,
Here is a brief rundown of the motors of the W201 chassis:

There are m102 engines (4cyl): 1.8, 2.0, 2.3 (manual and automatic)
There are "cosworth" tuned engines that are still m102s (4cyl): 2.3-16v, 2.5-16v (manual and automatic) 2.5-16v being the more rare of the two
The 2.5-16v is the engine used in the EVOII (Only 502 ever made) there is one here in Melbourne too.
There are also m103 engines (6cyl): 2.6

The EVO refers to the "Evolution" models and were only made in LHD

There is plenty of information out there on all of these.

Hope this helps :D

Thanks for all the info guys . . . I often travel down burwood hwy out to camberwell and eastern burbs, I did go and see Geoff a while ago but to get info on mosselman turbo system for the 190e or a blower set up for 90's 500 / 600 SL just to see the damage I would be up for on the wallet should I decide to go down this path, he's a genuine good bloke and was very helpful and didn't treat me like some dumb kid talking big, I suppose he knew I was serious if I had made the effort to sought this type of advice - if only more people in the industry were like him.

I can't send PM's cause of noob status so I can't get in contact with BAD300 unless he / she comments on one of my posts - come on moderator seesh! I can't even search the forums for topics that would have been previously discussed which would save a lot of people on here their valuable input and time on answering my questions which already have been raised before, come on moderator - please fix this up.

Any hou . . I was browsing some of my favourite classic car sites and came across a real deal Evo II for sale in spain . . . http://www.classicdriver.com/uk/find/41 ... ID=1807431

hmmm . . . 60k aussie ain't half bad for something like this huh ? I'll just grab my imaginary cheque book with the imaginary million dollars cause I know or have been told that you really can't afford something unless you have three times the amount of money in reserve for the what the object of your desire is worth. So it's off to do some hard yakka from next week to actually to make some things a reality - not the EvoII - it's a bit too extravagant to drive daily cosy is good enough for now. I mean check out that spoiler, I don't have time to take it to an airfield in my busy schedule any time soon just yet.

Once again thanks for all your input, I will chase this stuff up in the not too distant future and publish my results and finding for the benefit of other members on here.

Cheers

A.
