So it's a wet multi plate clutch combined with some sort of torque converter? Would like some more details on this, I will do a bit of a search.....

It has to a be a good idea coming from the brains of Mercedes and AMG (well mostly anyway!).
A wet "start up clutch" replaces the torque converter - looks to me like a wet multi plate clutch encased inside a torque converter type casing.
Wet clutch should make plates last longer, but will still need to be replaced (intervals hopefully longer than a conventional manual clutch?) - motorbike ones don't last that long so see how it goes.
The blipping of the throttle on down shifts seems a bit over the top (wanky)! The gains made would have to be great - conventional torque converter is a very simple device, this does not look so......
Not sure about there press release either..
"The resulting direct connection to the powertrain, together with the double-declutching and Race Start functions, guarantees an extremely emotional, supremely dynamic driving experience."

Stronger? An AMG SLS is a seriously powerful car which was designed to be thrashed ,if mercedes had a stronger box they would have it .

Yes but if they ran it on nitrous, wouldn't it be a funnily powerful car?

For someone as old as me ,nothing is new especailly when you consider that mercedes had an option called Hydrak in the 1950's which worked almost the same way. you simply touched the gear lever and changed gear. There wasn't even a clutch pedal.
Clutch operated epicyclic trannys have been around since the begining of the car. 15 million model T's had a manually operated Epicyclic trans. The Wilson preselector was used in thousands of cars, trucks busses and locomotives and was even used in race cars.
The drag racing B&M clutch flight of the 1960's was simply a chrysler torque flight with a clutch instead of a torque convertor.
All work on the same principle.
