Sorry missed this one.

Timing shaft and balance problems are more drastic in the first of the M272 and M273 engines 2004 - 2008. - 2.8, 3.5 and 5 litre engines.
I would steer clear of any car with these engines in this time frame.
M.B. came under a couple of class actions in the U.S.A. regarding this issue. The first one not successful, the second one successful.
Many TSB's written on this problem.

if you have a failing Timing mechanisms in this country - good luck with it.

Early M112 and M113's suffered from a harmonic balance problem. This was caused (and still is) by leaks from the sensor cover and oil cooler gaskets above the Harmonic balancer. By 2004 this had been dealt with.

I happily bought my 2005 ML350 with the 3.5 V6. I did read all about the issues that these engines can have and it is a very small minority that do, just as in the 996 Porsche. The internet is full of bad stories and angry owners, not much of the happy, trouble free ones unfortunately.....

Every car made can have issues with it.
