True Cold Air Intake for Early R/C107 (D-Jet M116/117)

Post by Greg in Oz » Fri 19 Mar, 2010 11:39 pm

Having just seen the topic at http://www.mbcnsw.org.au/forum/index.ph ... l#msg30531 had me thinking that I had a posted topic regarding a cold air intake for the 107 on numerous forums. On that forum I had previously posted it at http://www.mbcnsw.org.au/forum/index.ph ... 16.msg1490 and on OzBenz I had posted it in the "Mods How Tos" at viewtopic.php?f=32&t=4056

Since the photos in my original topic were of the cold air intake on a 107, i decided to post it here on the "107 Mods" board (apologies for cross-posting). For the whole story and photos, see http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/sho ... p?t=119144

How about a coffee tin under the mudguard behind the headlight
yes i am carving a hole in the inner guard (but i am sure it won';t effect my resale value)

Thanks Greg for the mod info, I should give this a shot at some stage .

Any possiblity of water entering into the air system and if so is there outlet drain or the like?

I have seen a few of these on turbo'd Volvo's with marked improvements but always with the concern of water causing engine detonation.

If you run US lights, simply pull the high beam insert, carve a hole in each guard, and run a 5" duct right through to the front on each side.

thats a sure fire way to create controversy, upset purists and give you enough airflow to compensate for the relocation of two lights.  8)

thats basically what i am doing though we will use a coffee tin to shield the actual filter

wonder how many purists i can upset?
fortunately i don't have a family so they can't hunt them down for generations :)

I've posted this before too - this for a w108 3.5 - not as elegant as Greg's but it works well.

Giles,

No risk of water ingestion in normal use. The placement of the cold air intake next to the radiator behind the grille is exactly the same as what MB did with their later models. Furthermore, if you study the photos of the CAI on my 350SLC, you will notice that the bell-mouth intake for the air filter is mounted in an additional panel behind the panel between the headlight and oil cooler. The additional panel has a gap at its base which will allow any water to escape.

If however you plan on competing in rallies which involve deep water (see attached SLC rally car photo), you may need to consider the risk of water ingestion. Some of the factory rally cars addressed this by way of a flap which could be closed on the main air filter intake under the bonnet and a second air filter intake pipe drawing air from either within the cabin or from a "plennum" fed with a separate intake pipe (see attached photos).

The CAI was an easy and very effective mod on my D-Jet 350SLC. Unfortunately the same can't be said for my K-Jet 500SLC. I have fitted a dual intake air filter to it but both sides draw from within the engine bay without any easy means of allowing for cold air. One side has the ABS, screen washer bottle and coolant reservoir in the way. The other side has the air-con receiver drier in the way. Even the factory rally 5 litre SLCs didn't make provision for a CAI. One final comment however, is that the CAI is most effective in slower stop-start conditions where the intake would otherwise draw from hot and still air under the bonnet. When driving at higher speeds, the difference will be less obvious as the better air flow will help clear the hot air from the engine bay.
