Giles,

Those Mext Silver Arrows guys have quite a few videos on YouTube, many of them showing them very sideways and often facing from where they have just come, or attempting to punch holes in the scenery. On their history page at their website at http://www.silver-arrows.com/renting/ca ... ns/history some of the that text looks very familiar. Very much like what I wrote for the MB Club magazine here back in 2005 and then posted at http://www.mbcnsw.org.au/forum/index.ph ... 186.0.html don't you think? That article or parts of it have been reproduced in a large number of places on the web.

It's amazing how many videos on YouTube feature SLCs in rallies. Try searches on "500SLC rally", "450SLC rally" and "Mercedes SLC rally". There are lots of recent ones with the current interest in historic rallying in Europe but some also feature historic footage from the late 1970s and 1980 of the original 450 and 500SLC factory rally cars in action. Some I have watched include http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZdP6fV868c&fmt=18 , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYtcZqJz4rw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWbVYsqT85c . There is a group here in NSW called AMSAG that get into forest rallying and one of their members runs an SLC with a 5 litre M117 and can be seen in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf-PAfM4dEg&NR=1 and his in-car Oran Park video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duI9gz5TQMA . Speaking of Oran Park in-car video, have you seen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f80Dpxujun4 ?

Another one you will enjoy (if you don't already own it) is the DVD "The Evolution of Rallying - 50 Years Sideways". It's a great documentary which includes a chapter on the 5 litre factory SLC rally cars. Other MBs feature elsewhere on the DVD.

Thanks Greg,

I hadn't seen all but had seem some. Many thanks.

My car is due to arrive tomorrow. The wish list is getting longer and I have some success with the some items.I managed to get a suitable towbar for the bike rack moded from a W116. It will also serve well as "touch parker" spoiler. No checker plate platform for the co-driver to bounce on as yet though.

There is a rumour that I'm have some raised rear springs being made, Foto (aka Magnum P.I.) started this one. "No comment" on the possibility of this rumour being true.

I intend on getting it transferred from Vic. to WA licence before going ahead without any mods. Keeping it as standard as possible to get it across the pits first, then get things happening.

Regards,

Giles

Here ya' go...

Some original footage of the 500SLCs in action in the 1980 Rally of New Zealand http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTM5C3TrL4o

And someone has posted "The Evolution of Rallying" in numerous parts at http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... lying&aq=f
MBs feature in several places in the early parts and the SLCs feature at the beginning of part 6 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L8epqw5hzI

This really is a "must have" DVD for rally enthusiasts (and other motorsport enthusiasts). I got mine from http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/230434 but some of the motoring bookshops also stock it. The DVD has nice historic film footage backed up by a great soundtrack that captures the atmosphere and passion all those involved with the sport had. Brings back memories of my days helping mates build up Datsun 1600 and Escort rally cars and of those long nights out in the freezing cold forests in the mountains west of Sydney either competing or servicing.

Thanks again Greg, now looking at all of that footage is teasing me.

I love the way the SLC rips up the dirt and it's big fat butt hangs out longer than the lighter weight cars.

Got a call from Toll Logistics today, the car should arrive at about 8.00am tomorrow. I feel I may have to do a l o n g drive to work tomorrow morning to blow the cobwebs out and introduce the car to WA gravel roads. Yeah!!!

Then off to the sign writer to take pics and prepare for the decals. Still wrestling with the black bonnet concept. It's authentic but it damned hot here sometimes and I just wonder how much hotter it's going to make things in the engine bay. I guess it gets hot in East Africa too, but they did have aluminium bonnets and not steel.

Giles

Giles, just head out to old "Bunnings Stage" from the good old days when the WRC were here in WA.
Go over the two jumps sideways, set the car back up to go throught the creek, sharp turn and then POWER up the hill

Thanks Brad,

Think I'll leave tha "hang time" for the pro's. I used to go to The Telstra Rallies in the late 80's and early 90's to see these guys perform, unbeleivable what these guys would do having to drive on "marbles" as the gravel is often described.

Unfortunately I didn't get the car out on the dirt as I had a wipe-out on my push bike at 6.30am.

Happened going to fast around a corner that had water on in from some reticulation, hit the white give way lines and bit the ashphalt. Lost lots of skin, gravel rashed from left knee to left shoulder. Got some severely bruised ribs and a black eye. Fortunately I was wearing a helmut as my head whacked the road pretty hard. Helmuts make to look like a knob but I'm sure glad I was wearing one. It sure took me by surprise and after gathering my senses it was back on the bike for a slow ride home.

But the car has arrived, unscathed, which has taken some of the pain away.

The upgrades begin this weekend.

Regards,

Giles

Just put a huge Cigarette company logo on the bonnet, and that will make it predominantly red & white

Joe,
When they had the red and white cig company logo, it was usually applied to the roof and doors as can be seen in the attached photos (the last 500SLC rallied by the factory and the winner of the 1980 Bandama Ivory Coast Rally).

Giles,
I wouldn't be too concerned about any extra heat absorbed by a black bonnet. Most of the heat under that bonnet comes courtesy of that V8 in the cramped engine bay. The insulation on the underside of the bonnet probably doesn't help. Whilst it may stop some of the heat from sunlight falling on the bonnet getting into the engine bay, it also stops a lot of heat from escaping from underneath. I think if I was building up an SLC as a rally car (with a black bonnet), I would probably get rid of the under-bonnet insulation. I'm looking forward to following your progress with the rally car mods. I hope you document it all with photos. I will have to get onto that lighting bar for the Super Oscars. I know exactly how I'll be doing it. Just a case of finding the time.

I've a photo of the engine bay of the 450SLC Ivory Coast championship car taken inside the Stuttgart storeroom - unfortunately not many photos as was in the pre-digital camera days. Can confirm that there is NO underbonnet insulation installed in this car.

Well if the Rally car didn't have the bonnet insulation, there's one thing I can cross of my wish list.

Its safer to go fast within a Faraday cage, you don't get rashes but you do have to get a tin opener to get out if you bend it
stay away from bikes - they hurt

i think the SL will drift tighter than the SLC and allow a lot more dramatic control

the FIA series in Belguim has got some excellent footage coming out
have to see if we can compete with them - ive got the in car going, just need some corner jockeys for some external video, then i was going to build an infomercial.

Maybe later in the year we can all do a old Aus Mercs compilation video

You won't have any trouble finding throttle jockeys.

you will have trouble finding 107's able to compete without fear of bent bits of metal.

Perhaps most W107 owners buy too much of this

when they purchase their car.

Well, there's a fair choice of events!

How about this for an idea? Given that according to the forum sponsor, Canberra is at the centre of the known universe, and Wakefield Park at Goulburn is not that far from Canberra, we attempt some sort of gathering there?

As far as dates go I could suggest a couple of possibilities. One is a track day being run by the Classic Rally Club on August 2 (yes, it's a Monday but it's a bank holiday if that helps). It represents great value as being a track day means that you can pretty much drive as many laps as your car/tyres/brakes/fuel tank will allow. Track days are great for practice and trying different ideas. They are untimed but allow you to drive at whatever pace you're comfortable with. The other possibility is a club supersprint being run by Thornleigh Car Club on July 4 (a Sunday). Being timed this is a more serious event but offers fewer laps of the circuit.

Being a member of both these clubs I hope to get along to both days although I'm unsure if I'll have a run at both yet. I'm inclined to say I may run the track day but perhaps man a flag point and spectate at the supersprint. Whether having a run or not, it would be good to see a gathering of motorsport minded MB enthusiasts present.

Just another thought and one that caters for all those OzBenzers not necessarily into motorsport. In September every year there is the German Autofest which includes the MB Club ACT concours held in Canberra, right there in the "centre of the known universe". We have been making this event a regular in recent years. There's all those German cars on display for the enthusiasts and Floriade for the not-so-car-enthusiasts. Last year we made a full weekend of it, something friends have been doing for years, and what a great weekend it was. I know John G has tried to make this an OzBenz get-together before but maybe with plenty of forwarning and planning we can really pull it off. I know it's not a motorsport event but it's a great weekend, and I'd love to be able to meet other OzBenzers, chew the fat with them and check out all their great cars. I'm not sure of the date for this year off the top of my head but I'm sure John or someone can update us on this.

Why don't we get a Club motorsport forum up and we can get all the guys to figure out how to get an OzBenz club day together. It should involve excessive speed though and maybe Winton might be a better track to try. The PIARC guys have a good format including timing, chasing one another and sometimes passenger rides.

Who can organise this?
