The MerChevy lives

Post by TargaSL » Mon 18 Jan, 2010 2:34 pm

After much kerfuffle the LS3 is finally going in the old SL

Well done Daniel on what is certainly a masterpiece of engineering

I still haven't done a full on the hoist shoot yet but have got some track day stuff

On Jan 3rd a couple of the other Targa guys and myself got out to Symmons Plains for some testing

It was really quite and handful for the first couple of sessions and was kicking and bucking a fair bit. Guess thats predictable when you put circa 600hp in an old Merc

Camera stuff was only moderate in quality and i am getting a incar system with data logging for better video output

anyway enjoy the stuff so far and we are getting geared up for a more serious Motorsport year so lots more coming

TargaSL,

Great stuff, looks like two handsful.

What's your malamute's name? Had a few, great dogs but so stubborn and they do what they want do.

Brilliant, well done.
Saw a black W108 sedan at the Willowbank drags Saturday night.
It looked great and did a 12 second pass.
Must have a had a similar motor in

Thanks for replies

i have 3 malamutes
Kaska, Sundance and Mishka, better than a family :)

Car certainly was a handful but i got used to it by the end of the day and the footage when tame is not exciting

I am getting an in car video and data logger so i will be able to put up some semi-pro in car soon

Hey Paul,

the first session looked like a bunch of understeer into the corner then lift-off oversteer before you gas it and get some huge power oversteer with the opposite lock.
got a few curious questions:

were your tyres hot?

Perhaps it could be cured with a little more roll stiffness in the rear and a little less in the front.
what corner weights do you have?
The SL is never going to be perfect due to the frontal mass and ridiculous short wheelbase, but I know you had the car setup well before, so now you need the chassis to cope with an extra 200 rwhp.

Hope to see you get it sorted soon. Good luck! :!:

tyre temps and pressures are all still experimental

There is a whole swag of stuff do pursuant of the testing day
Certainly i now have a 600hp engine in an old car that was out of the factory at 300.
with the old 5.6 in it the turn in was great, but now with the frightening high end torque (like 904Nm) just means that i hit the braking points anywhere up to 40% faster and now pulling it up is a struggle even with AP Racing front disks. Driving around slow it is very precise and crisp, but a 200Km braking points it does squirm about a fair bit

On the workplan is an upgrade of the springs, probably another 70% as well as revalving shocks. Back brakes actually disintegrated and had to be fixed just to get the car home. Which is good news for one of you guys as i will sell the Eilbach pro sports in it at the moment

most of the armcove to armcove stuff was an exuberant right foot and is thus controllable (when i stop giggling)

corner weights being remeasured next week

3 videos up now and i fixed up the first session and worth a rewatch
