How do I get one of those into my 300SEL?

Must be a Merchevedes.

Doesn't look like the bonnet will fit though, minor concern I would imagine.

Vrmmmmmmmmmm.

The bonnet will fit... with barely enough clearance between that inlet manifold and the bonnet. the 107 bonnet bulge is very deceptive, but to me it looks so close that it is relying entirely on the centre bulge to cope with the fit.

I'm glad it's not me fitting it back on - it's going to be a damn close fit.

Nice Job. post pics of the first pair of black rubber tracks it leaves when you press the loud pedal. :)

Heh, once I stopped staring at the great lump in the engine bay, I spied those seats in the interior - what have you in mind for this beast? :D

As John points out it is now a Tarmac Rally Car
there is a four race series this season
Mt. Buller 3 weeks
Hobart - Jan 10
Marysville March 10
and the Bathurst of Targas - Tassie April 10

the engine is obvioulsy not authentic but i can afford it as a spare on my privateer budget
we got 500+ hp with a HSV crate motor and a crazy cam couple to a Turbo 700 auto (perish the thought of a nasty clutch pedal clogging up the footwell)

Daniel (MercStar) and I are now the world authorities on ramming chevies into old Mercs we may call them Mercevies

the estimation about the bonnet is correct there is literaly a finger between the manifold and the bonnet
this was after modifying the cross member to get it low enough

On top of that it is engineering so meticiously that we can retrofit the M117 without a lot of fuss.
To run the Classic class i will need the mother of all M117's, so i am going to look for a sponsor

Here is the list of mods we are planning for a M117
The engine actually ran without oil or water and a rod hanging out the block. Though we only did it quickly. What a noise, it made everyone giggle

Engine mods planned are
Steel sleeve the block (the older the alloy metal gets the more brittle it is and harder to get the heat out. this means the steel not the alloy is taking the friction from the pistons.
Forged Alloy pistons (Chrome Molloy) upgrading to modern metal qualities
the Mother of all piston rings
larger valves (and what would be really fantastic would be if someone could find me the very rare quad cams heads) already looked at adapting some M119 ones but no go. An entire M119 won't fit in the engine bay either (5 inches to wide)
Helicoil the head studs
tear drop the crank
lightweight rods
the big issue is the injection. I want to go completely custom rails and ECM like a Motec as I firmly believe that the reliability depends on micro managing the engine under stress. The 6.2 litre Chevy spare engine we run for track stuff manages 500+hp by injection/tuning control. I want to replicate this to increase fuel flows and manage pinging etc
We have already done the suspension by dropping it down 3 inches and extreme shocker rates (read billy cart ride)
The diff has had a ramp and plate mod similar to the Australian V8 Supercars. Superior to a Detroit Locker that it locks up completely but gradually
Radiators - theres about 4. water, engine oil, trans oil, power steer oil
Brakes - have both biggest 5.6 brakes and also aftermarket monsters that only just fit in the 18" wheels
Roll cage - 85 triangles shoved in the cabin. very crowded, but i can run with the roof off if it gets too hot
Intercoms, service radios, video mounts
6 point harneses, carbon fibre seats, terratrip
gearbox is a 4 slot auto nobbled so that it engages only the gear you select. very useful for downshifting and replicating the manual feel, which saves me clogging up the footwell with a nasty clutch thing. Sort of a classic tiptronic
we are lowering the high staller converter down to about 2200 with full lock up. it was previoulsy too high and flared too much. once again replicates the clutch/flywheel feel
the car weighed in at 1623kg last Targa. Taking the 2 seats out saved about 150kg !!
I will endeavour to get some more action shots and in car video this season.
Anyone wanting some specific shots to assist them in their mods let me know – happy to help
Once we have got it sorted the engineer at MercStar Melbourne will be publishing some details and perhaps some products to make road cars go fast for track days.

Pictures attached of broken engine from Targa
it was due to limping the engine for a day and a half with tooo much oil starvation

For those that haven't seen it here is 7 seconds of nearly in control

In the meantime enjoy your Merc Mumbo

John have some more pics - where should i upload them to?

Paul,

I've been working with some car-cam set-ups. If you are interested in setting up some small bullet cams in the car, to record all the screaming action, shoot me a PM or an email. More than happy to loan you some kit.

Cheers

What system do you have?
i looked at one for Targa but it was $3k so just got by with a handcam bolted on the cage

lipstick cams with auto start would be good and one less thing to be focusing on at the start line, but certainly out of $ at the moment

It's 3 x Sony bullet cams (lipstick cams), fed into a 4 way video switcher, then recording mpeg4 video to either USB drive or SC card via a digital video recorder.

Here is a sample of something recorded at my track down at Sandown in the 450SL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veTUDed08aQ

Video quality suffered a little in being converted for youtube.

I have since added a 3.5" monitor to the set-up to allow the ability to better setup and monitor the cams.

It will require your co-driver to start the recording, and switch cameras on the switcher though.

I'll be upgarding the cameras at some point to provide better colour reproduction, too. But it's an evoltionary process at this stage while I find the best and most cost efficient way of doing it all.

It runs off 12v.

how often do you get to Sandown?

is this the product you refer to http://www.bulletdvr.com/multi-cam-dvr.html
or maybe http://www.racecam.com.au/fullyintegratedcameras/
