What colour centres for my Pentas?

Post by Greg in Oz » Sat 12 Oct, 2013 11:39 pm

After deciding against an expensive professional refurbishment of my 16" x 8" ATS AMG Pentas formerly fitted to my 350SLC (see viewtopic.php?f=25&t=18082 ), I cleaned them up a bit myself.

Today I trial fitted them to my 500SLC to see how they look and to snap some photos prior to fitting them with fresh tyres. For now I have just polished the rim lips but eventually I want to repaint the centres (spokes) and clear coat the whole lot to preserve the finish. All I need to decide is what colour for the centres. The obvious choices are either the standard silver (as they are now) or the grey metalic finish as applied to the lower body section of the 107026 (5 litre SLC) models. I am tending towards the grey finish. Apart from matching the car I believe this will provide a good contrast with the polished rim lips (and the brake dust shouldn't be so obvious either).

Have a look at these photos and feel free to offer your opinion.

Funny you should mention this Greg, I too could not bring myself to pay for a professional refurbishment so I decided to do the job myself.
Mine are the series 2 without the deep dish and they didn't have a polish lip. So I decided just to go with the one colour.
I done plenty of Bundts in 735 Astral Silver but I thought these needed something extra. I've chosen a metallic diamond silver acrylic. I've painted and clear coated them today and have yet finished the job as I have to wait to compound them.
Here's a ordinary photo taken by my I-phone which doesn't do true justice to the finish.

Giles,

It's always a bit hard to get a good idea of how light or dark silvers and greys are in photos. Is that Diamond Silver somewhat darker than Astral Silver? In your photos it looks darker although probably not as dark as the grey on the lower body panels of my 500SLC.

Thanks,

Giles
No, they're actually 225/50R16. The replacement tyres (purchased from another OZBENZer with a wheel addiction possibly worse than mine) which I have yet to fit are also 225/50. These are marginally smaller in OD than the stock size for the SLC but 225/55 would be slightly larger by almost exactly the same amount. Going slightly smaller helps avoid risks of rubbing that may come with the wider tyre and greater outward offset. The 225/50 is also a very common size these days which means a good choice of tyres at reasonable prices. The closest match for the original tyre OD would be 235/50R16 (which would also be a good match to the 8" rim), however this does not appear to be a common size at all.

It does have a grey hue to until the light hits and then it comes to life. More glitter than 70's Glam Rock.

Here's a sets of Bundts I trialed with the paint before doing the Penta's. I did these first just in case I didn't like the colour. As you can see the top two look quite grey and the bottom two look much brighter, just depends on the light.

Just an opinion, but i reckon go with the colour of your lower panels. My logic is that they look great of course (they are pentas!) but as they are they stand out as more of an addition as opposed to being more part of the car. Slightly different situation but when i put the ones i got from Shane on the SEC they looked a real addition, as did it with the momos i bought the car with, but when painted they just seemed to blend in and look more like they belonged. Hope that makes sense early on a Sunday morning!

Thanks Craig. I tend to agree with you. I know Merc factory alloy wheels have always tended to be silver, but it was popular for AMG wheels of that period to have their centres colour matched to the car in much the same way as the metal hub caps / wheel covers for steel wheels were. Obviously Thistle Green on the wheels would look completely wrong, however I feel the grey would contrast nicely with the polished lips whilst tying in well with the lower body panels. A mid metallic grey is also not too different to the stock silver.

Greg try a can of "Dupli-colour" high performance wheel coating - in silver (you can buy the cans from most shops selling Dupli-Colour cans)
The silver colour is not so light as Astral Silver which i don't like.
It has a highly reflective metal flake mixture that you cannot get in the normal paint coded cans (they tend to come out too "flat looking" in depth)
The small red spray nozzle is crap (spray pattern too narrow) which needs to be removed and replaced with a white nozzle that fits the can and has a better spray pattern.

Leave them a few days to dry -then apply aprox 5 or more coats of clear (30 mins between coats)
The leave at least a couple of weeks to fully harden then start the wet sanding/buffing process to get the clear to a high gloss finish and i think you will be pretty happy

The depth of finish from that paint with a subtle metallic flake in it really does look good especially in the sunlight
Added bonus is the paint is formulated especially for wheels and can take the heat generated but also drys to a harder/tougher finish

The Duplicolor paint you mentioned Kim I have used on Bundts previously with good results. I found a paint that's referred to as M35 to be identical and slightly more economical than cans. That is if you have a spray gun and compressor. I used the M35 on the Pentas. Ultra bright when directly hits it.

Thanks Kim & Giles,

Just not sure that I actually want a bright silver paint. Given that they have polished lips I'm thinking that darker centres will provide a nice contrast. The logical colour choice for me is the metallic grey on the lower body of the 500SLC. Apart from Craig, does anyone else agree with me or do others also feel they should be bright silver?

This is what i am talking about in the pic below.
It blends in with the Merc Grey used on the lower panels
Couple of different shots as the sun /angle etc plays tricks when trying to get an idea with pics

Kim, that does match the grey very well. I suspect that grey is the same as or similar to the light grey on the lower panels of our white 300TE and 190E. It is much lighter than the grey on the 500SLC. On the 500SLC the grey is fairly dark (a bit darker than it appears in my photos in my first post above) but is also quite "metallic". Maybe I should play around with colouring the wheel centres with Photoshop first.

My thoughts on grey is that brake dust with darken them even more, hence why I went lighter.

But either way the wheels suit the car.

A digital camera can't capture what a brilliant finish some paints can give.

A bit of Photoshopping and here are the same photos but with the centres in metallic grey. Compare them with the photos in my first post and feel free to offer your opinions.

I think I like like it. They don't have quite the same in-your-face bling, but being a little more subtle I feel they look like they belong.

Yeah your on the money Greg and that gun metal colour does suit it fine.
If you get a paint shop to mix up some paint either for a can or spray gun ask them to add more metallic to the paint to give it some depth

Thanks Giles and Kim. I do prefer the subtle look rather than excessive bling. They give an impression they're meant to be there rather than added later.

One last comment, if there is clearcoat on them now (or put a layer on) and then paint in the colour and don't like it, I expect you could wet rub it back off and preserve what is under it.

After fitting the new 225/50R16 tyres it was interesting to check the calibration of my Terratrip rally computer. The new tyres actually ended up being about 3% smaller in overall rolling circumference (and therefore diameter) than my old 215/60R15 tyres (which in turn are theoretically slightly smaller diameter than the stock 107 sizes of either 205/70R14 or 205/65R15). Obviously tyres vary considerably between brands as by calculation the 225/50R16 tyres should only be about 1.2% smaller than the 215/60R15. Either the new ones are smaller than usual or (as I suspect is the case) the old ones were larger. This is even more so considering I'm comparing worn old ones (which would be smaller due to wear) with new ones with full tread depth.

Even though the new 225/50R16 tyres are smaller in overall diameter, they wouldn't want to be any larger on the SLC. As a result of the extra width and outward offset, I noticed that with plenty of steering lock they actually just slightly rub the lower corners of the front rubber spoiler.

Thanks for that suggestion Craig. The silver paint is probably not good enough to really go to too much trouble to preserve though. After plenty of time thinking about it and the Photoshopping exercise, I am certain now that I want the grey centres. For now I will just paint them myself which will be fine given the use they will get (see viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15989#p128791 ). If at some time in the future I decide I want them painted to a higher quality finish (in eaither grey or silver), they will need to be stripped back to bare metal as they already have several layers of paint.
