107.026 owners get it easy.

Here's a couple of shots of an m117 with euro headers.

look carefully @ the bellhousing.

what a shame you can't put that starter on the other side...

Bugger.

It's 'one of those things' that can really frustrate you, when you see these things that just 'bolt on' and they only come in one flavour: LHD & .026 block stud pattern.

still... 107.026 owners should take note.

I think we need Greg to confirm this, but that looks like a 117 960 block to me from the VERY early 450SLC 5.0. later versions you could not bolt the manual box up to.

Box is a 5 speed also...

That would be correct. it is 117.960 from a 450slc

I am looking very closely at the stud pattern and mounting differences to 117.968

it's a nice and neat solution. I wonder why it never continued...

Yes, it would be an early 117.960. Whilst all the 107.026 had the 117.960 engine, there were two different versions of that engine. The early one had the bolt pattern to suit the 3 speed auto as was fitted to the 350 and 450 (iron block M116 & M117) whereas the late one changed the bolt pattern to suit the 4 speed auto as fitted to the 126 and late 107 (with alloy M116 & M117). The changeover pretty much coincided with the change in model designation from 450SLC 5.0 to 500SLC although this wasn't the exact changeover point. The early and late engines also differed very slightly in displacement due to a reduction in bore of 0.1mm on the late engine. This took the displacement from just over 5 litres to just under to comply with motorsport competition regulations.

As for fitting a manual box to a 117.960, I wonder how it would go? The performance and driving experience would be fun but I wonder about the strength and durability of the gearbox. MB only ever fitted a manual (4 speed) behind the 3.5 M116. I understood the reason that it wasn't fitted to anything larger was due to the strength (or lack of) of the gearbox. I know the manual 350s don't have a reputation of having a particularly durable gearbox. The factory 5 litre SLC rally cars ran with autos. You would have expected that if a manual could have been used it would have. This may have been due to the lack of a sufficiently strong gearbox (it is a common belief that only the auto was strong enough) however there would have also been the homologation requirements of having to sell sufficient numbers of equivalent spec cars to the public. In the case of the 5 litre SLC, only just enough were manufactured as autos each year to satisfy homologation requirements. I doubt they could have manufactured and sold sufficient numbers as manuals, even if a suitable gearbox was available. The result was that the 5 litre SLC was the world's first rally car with a V8 engine and auto transmission.

I just had a better look at the photos. Something that isn't correct for a 107.026 is the oil filter. The 107 version is the one that hangs down next to the sump whereas that one is the version that sticks up with a removable lid.

That would be because this engine is destined for a 126, although it still has a 107 sump.

The Owner of this combo said they used flywheel, clutch and bell housing of a M116 3.5.
They then modified a 6 cylinder G76/27-5 speed with input shaft, constant gear, front cover and bearings out of a G76/27-A4 speed (originally fitted to the M116 3.5).
This makes it a straight fit on the iron block M117 4.5 and will fit with small modification to the bell housing to the very early alloy block M117 found on the 450 SLC 5.0 three speed auto (above engine).
Obviously it won't fit on the later alloy blocks with four speed auto because they changed the block design and bolt pattern.
