A160 or A170 worth a look?

Hi guys. Looking at w168 or w169 models.
I.ve read Honestjohns article from the forum. Does he mean the whole range was a dud, (ala Holden camira) or there were some that were suspect, at the time?
Would I be correct in thinking, that the 160's & 170's stll running are perhaps not duds? Most are aproaching or past 100,000k so wouldn't any with gearboxes issues, and the like, have come to light by now? (and been fixed).
Whilst not committed to either, I like the fact older drivers seem to own or have owned these models. My thinking is the general level of care would be greater.
certainly the A160 at around 10k seems decent value, even allowing for its age. Altho I havent sat in either, my leaning may be to the later A170. (around 20k)
Your thoughts, experiences, stories etc will be much appreciated.

The A class has been discussed at length.
There are those who get good runs out of the A classes
There are a certain percentage where the transmission dies and the repair is more than the car is worth.
There are acknowledged problems with these cars.
It's a matter of whether or not you want to take a gamble.

There is a dedicated U.K. for the A class discussing the pro's and con's.
There are a lot of hints on that site into A class ownership.
