Ignition Key won't turn - 2007 B180 CDI

Post by pastelgrey300D » Mon 15 Aug, 2016 12:24 am

Hello all, posting on behalf of another local enthusiast -

B180 180CDI (2007) has totally failed to proceed, the key will not turn in the ignition and the steering wheel is locked. No prior warning, just went to put key in and could not get it to turn - the steering wheel was turned slightly and is now locked.

Tried the second/spare set of keys and no change - so don't believe it is a key issue. I'm not sure if these cars have a mechanical or electrical interlock or if the steering lock is electronically controlled.

If anyone has any tips, input or has had a similar problem before, any info would be welcomed before they have the car towed to the dealer.

If this had happened to their R107 450SL I would have had all the answers - but no idea where to start in this case.

Cheers!
David

We had a similar issue with my C250 Turbodiesel. I put the key in and nothing happened, the steering would not unlock and the key would not turn.
It turned out to be the little door that covers the lock receptacle. It had stuck open and once it was freed up and lubricated, it worked perfectly.
Check it out without putting the key in the lock. If the door is closed, then put the key in. If open, try to close it, then try the key.
Hope this helps,
Tony

Now you can't complain about the service on here......... 1am and someone poses a nightmarish problem and by 1.30 am they have a very plausible answer! (although i do realise there is a time difference and Tony wasn't up quite as late as Dave...... his children are probably sleeping well or all grown up!

My children are old enough to look after themselves. LOL.
Yes, the time difference is both a detriment and a benefit.

Thanks Tony! Have forwarded your tips on and will see how they go - this is the only issue they have ever had with their B180 so hope its something simple.

Once I get home from work in the evenings it's all go until baby is asleep and then dishes are all done - then I finally have the chance to check ozbenz before falling asleep on my keyboard...

You are lucky David. Our girl - who just turned two - only goes to sleep at 9:30 or sometimes even later than 10.... by which the parents are both beyond bed time.

An update on this - the car has been fixed. The problem was the steering lock module - here is a picture of the dodgy part in question:
b class lock.JPG
The steering column had to be removed and the housing of the lock module cut open and bent back to reveal the motor and gear assembly. From there they were able to manually turn the gears by hand to unlock the steering wheel and then remove the module. So either the motor or the control circuitry inside failed.

All up cost was $1400 (although a fair chunk of this was labour costs).

Has anyone else had this issue? The next question is could there be any other cause of this module failing or is it an isolated incident of failure of the internal components?
