ML63 Limp Mode/ESP Light/Engine Light

Post by MLSixtyThree » Tue 08 Dec, 2015 4:27 pm

Hi - new to this site. My wife's ML63 (2007) has been excellent since we purchased 12 months ago with only 60,000 on the clock.
All of a sudden it has started playing up. First "ESP Inoperable" comes up on the centre console and the car basically shuts down - not even limp mode - just completely shuts down as you are driving. At same time yellow check engine light also coming on (this also disappears after a few restarts). When you restart the car it runs perfect but then repeats within 10 mins. Can't believe the vehicle just shuts down like this - extremely dangerous. Any advice appreciated. additional factors to note - car recently had steering pump replaced/when fuel cap is removed when the tank is near empty there doesn't appear to be any 'back pressure' in the petrol tank.

Your car is way to late for me to be much use - but learning from others it sounds like getting the codes read is step one. But i am sure more useful people will respond

Hi,
never had that with mine; I guess the first step is to go to MB and check the errors. Do you have any extended guarantee?

Hi are you in Sydney?

As a Mb tech and now in business on my own i have dealt with this problem alot, it happens across the whole w164 range. Wheel speed sensors fail which causes the car to basically shut down if lock the wheels up while rolling, it is not uncommon to replace one and then the next week another one of the fail

I have a similar problem in my W164 ML320CDI. It only happens on really hot days. If I leave the car sitting in the sun after a drive, and if the ambient temperature is much above 30C, when I restart the car, the ABS, traction control, cruise all shut off. The car runs OK but without these features. If I drive for 1 km, stop, switch off and restart, the problem disappears. I doubt it's the wheel speed sensors, since I don't have any, do I?

If you have ABS, ESP or traction control then you do have wheel speed sensors, which detect is one wheel is spinning faster than the others, or if they have stopped spinning when other(s) are not. They tell the computer that it needs to do ABS, or Traction control, depending on the operating mode of the vehicle (eg Brake applied).

OK. Now I feel stupid. Didn't think it through. So it might be a wheel sensor that fails because of the heat in the stationary wheel? And recovers once I move off again?

Just joking. Just sad to see the Defender end production last month :boohoo: . The suggestions from the other (more sensible) forum members should be followed. Go team OzBenz :director: !
